Projector Photography Night September 28 September 2022

Help us by providing images for the evening, please!

Projector Photography

PROJECTOR PHOTOGRAPHY involves projecting an image onto a background, a person, or another object for artistic effect. And, in a first for the club, Hedon Viewfinders is going to experiment with the techniques at our Wednesday 28 September meet-up.

We’ll have two projectors available which we’ll use as mobile light sources. We are asking club members to help us by providing images that would make for a striking effect when projected. Colourful artwork or patterned images would work well but consider the effect that your images might have when projected onto a face, body, object, or surface. You might choose to create your own images especially customised for the night. Email your images to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk by 6pm Tuesday 27 September.

By working with other club members, you might be able to design some themes that might work on the night; vintage, sci-fi, fashion, etc. These themes might then suggest props and costumes that might enhance the photo shoot.

It looks like it will be a fun night with everybody able to take some very different photos.

Trophy Presentations

HEDON VIEWFINDERS Photography Club formally presented the engraved trophies to the winners of the Preston Show Open Photography Competition last week (Wednesday, September 14) at the Haven Arms in Hedon.

The annual Photographer of the Year was Simon Dallimore from Withernsea who won the Landscapes and Buildings categories with his sunlit snowy scene of the Pierhead Towers. The Young Photographer of the Year shield was won this year by 15-year-old Holderness Academy student Alex Darcy with his monochromatic panoramic seascape scene. Also awarded his trophy was People and Places category winner Kieth Madden of Hedon with his photo of a character in traditional Indian dress.

Awarded their trophies by the Club’s Chair Ray Duffill were:

  • Annual Photographer of the Year Simon Dallimore
  • Annual Young Photographer of the Year Alex Darcy (15)
  • People and Places category trophy winner Keith Madden.

Photos by Lynn Leedham:

The show itself was held on August 6 at the Nag’s Head in Preston, when the other winners were awarded their trophies: Jane Jeffrey (Best Animal Photo by a Preston resident) and Sandra Wood (Best Mobile Phone Photo – with Viki Hogger presenting the prizes).

In total, over 120 photographs were entered into the competition, seen by an estimated 750 people during the day of the show. Ray Duffill from Hedon Viewfinders extended his and the Club’s thanks to the organisers of the Preston Show, the Preston Village Community Group, and also his thanks to Mr. James Green from Holderness Academy for facilitating the entries from students at the school.

Week 38 #Puntophoto – it’s new, and it’s fun!

We introduce #Puntophoto to the World! Your Week 38 Challenge of our 52-Week Photography project.

Puntophoto [Pun-to-photo] Week 38 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge

Take a well-known saying, a catchphrase, a title of a book, film, or song perhaps, and create an image that gives it a comical or literal twist.

We are introducing Puntophoto to the world as part of Week 38 of the Hedon Viewfinders 52-Week Photography Challenge. It’s designed to get those creative juices flowing. A starting point is to think of a simple phrase or saying that you or others use – and then can you imagine a different version or meaning of that saying?

This might be something as literal as Jack in the Box

…to the comical Groom and his bride 2B (get it? 2B is actually a grade of the graphite softness of a pencil):

You can use tabletop creations like Lost his Marbles

… or real people like Get Ahead in Life:

Other phrases that might help you get started are High Five, Love Boat, Funny Bone, Time Flies… etc. Once you start thinking then more will come and your imagination will then determine how they might become a Puntophoto.

pun – a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.

Oxford English Dictionary

Your challenge this week is to create your own Puntophotos!

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock (unless necessary for the particular challenge).

And do please send in your images associated with these challenges – or your other activities as a Club Member. We will publish them on these pages.

Negative space in photography – a positive thing!

New challenge for Week 37 – and a plug for our Presentation Night on Wednesday.

WEEK 37 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge is about using NEGATIVE SPACE.

Using ‘negative space’ in photography means emphasising a subject by paying attention to the area around it. This area will dominate the majority of the picture and is often uniform in colour or texture and includes no distracting elements – it may be just empty space.
Effective use of negative space can create dramatic photos with a stark contrast between the subject and the surrounding area. As a rule of thumb, your subject should occupy less than 50% of the frame.
Using negative space is something you can consider when deciding on the composition in your frame. By moving around and considering different viewpoints, can you isolate your subject so it’s surrounded by negative space?
Your challenge in Week 37 is to consider and experiment with the use of negative space.

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock (unless necessary for the particular challenge).

And do please send in your images associated with these challenges – or your other activities as a Club Member. We will publish them on these pages.

Club News – Lensballs, Lamps and Trophies!

Photography for everyone at Hedon Viewfinders at the Haven Arms on Wednesdays…

HEDON VIEWFINDERS continues to organise photography events at its Haven Arms venue on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. As ever, we always seek to encourage, welcome and support new members. You don’t have to book in advance, you can just turn up to take part in the town’s free, fun and friendly photography club.

Lensball Photography: They might also be known as crystal balls, but you don’t need one to plan your next shot! These fascinating aids to photography provide optics that create some fascinating effects. They can also be used as props in their own right.

You don’t need a lensball to take part in the event but if you have one, bring it along! This will be interesting to those who have never used a lensball, but we hope to provide something different to those who have.

Lensball Photography: 7pm on Wednesday 31 August 2022 at the Haven Arms in Hedon.

Macro or close-up Photography – a focus on lamps/bulbs: Macro photography is a wide-ranging subject, but at this meet-up, we are encouraging you to have a closer look at light bulbs as a subject. If you want to bring along your own (carefully!) as a subject, then please do. But we will have some props to play with.

Macro or close-up Photography – a focus on lamps/bulbs: 7pm on Wednesday 7 September 2022 at the Haven Arms in Hedon.

Presentation Night: We hope to present the annual Photographer of the Year Award and Young Photographer of the Year Shield to the winners resulting from the Open Photography Competition at Preston Show and Family Fun Day.

Additionally, we’ll be seeking volunteers to work on our ideas for next year’s show – plus we have exciting news to announce about a new club exhibition next year.

Presentation Night: Take your seats for 7pm on Wednesday 14 September 2022 at the Haven Arms in Hedon.

Photography Challenge Week 34 – Move your camera!

There is a freedom and creative release that comes from deliberately moving the camera during an exposure – have fun breaking the rules!

WEEK 34 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge
INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT (ICM)
There’s an obsession in photography with sharpness; clear and sharply-focused subjects are often the key to a good image and that requires a stationary camera. And yet there is a freedom and creative release that comes from deliberately moving the camera during an exposure.

Intentional Camera Movement or ICM is a style of shooting that results in very different and unique images. It’s called ‘swiping’ the camera in America, and that probably better describes the technique, in that you swipe the camera whilst taking a shot and it’s the movement of the camera (whether fast or slow is up to you) quite often coupled with a slower shutter speed that creates the effects.

Whilst there are no rules in how and what you do, it is still advisable to consider what your subject is. Strong colours work well, and well-defined lines can give you an idea of what direction to swipe your camera. Trees often make a good subject for ICM photos as do landscape and seascape shots. Static lights in the dark are also a good subject.

Your challenge this week is to experiment with Intentional Camera Movement!

A Smashing Time with Hedon Viewfinders!

The crashing together of one or more water-filled objects and capturing that collision and resulting spillage in a photo sounds like a crazy idea!

WELL…. perhaps not ‘smashing’ but certainly a crashing time! At Hedon Viewfinders on Wednesday 24 August 2022 we are going to practice an experiment popularised by YouTube tutor Gavin Hoey.

The crashing together of one or more water-filled objects and capturing that collision and resulting spillage sounds like a crazy idea! But as the video shows, there is much to learn about camera settings and the use of flash and other lighting.

This will be an indoor session but depending on the weather there are some related exercises/experiments we can do outside too.

Bring your cameras, flash if you’ve got one, and a tripod is always useful.

“Hedon Viewfinders in Action!”

Taking photographs that show all aspects of the work of the Club… this replaces the meeting previously advertised.

OUR MEETING WEDNESDAY 17th AUGUST 2022 will now be a Practical Club Promotion Night.

The night will be a practical photography night which will aim to capture “Hedon Viewfinders in Action!” and result in photographs that show all aspects of the work of the Club.

It will be a creative night too as we set up scenes that show club members doing table-top photography, doing group work inside and out, etc, etc, and having fun. Our tripods, lights and kit can become props as well as practical tools. The night will also be a great opportunity to get a group shot of current members.

Viewfinders in action from 2017

Aspects of our club nights that we might set up scenes for, could be shadows, reflections, product photography and still life, panning, portraits, etc. If you want to bring along interesting props or costumes that we can use in the scenes, then please do.

“Hedon Viewfinders in Action!” – a Practical Club Promotion Night. Bring your cameras and kit.

Paull Holme Tower visit

You need to let us know you are coming IN ADVANCE, please!

The 700-year-old Paull Holme Tower was once part of a grand manor house complex and is a Grade 1 listed ancient monument. It was opened to the public for the first time ever in September 2011 and quite simply was a wreck and classed by English Heritage as ‘at risk’ of being lost forever.

However, through the efforts of Simon Taylor, who bought the tower and pledged to do something with it, the monument was saved and funding secured to shore the building up and latterly to construct a new roof and restore the crenelations (battlements).

Hedon Viewfinders members first visited the tower as a club in 2016 before the construction work. This next visit by the club is on Wednesday (10 August 2022) and should allow us to see the work that has been done and afford some rooftop views to those braver members wishing to climb up to the top.

It will be a fascinating visit. However, because it is a very old building (it’s not a refined tourist attraction) then entry to the tower will be at members’ own risk. Should you choose not to enter then there are still some great photography opportunities to be had from the outside.

Members are advised to meet at Paull Holme Strays Nature Reserve car park in time for a 6.45pm short walk to the tower (we will arrange to ferry those to the site who find the 5-minute walk difficult – let us know in advance).

Directions to the Nature Reserve: From the A1033 follow the signs for Fort Paull and then head south on Thorngumbald Road. The entrance to the car park is on the right just less than a mile after St Andrew’s Church. Get there ready to leave for the walk to the tower by 6.45pm, please.

If you are planning to attend, and haven’t informed us already, then please email on viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com to confirm your intention to attend.
