Weekly tasks game / constructive critique session

New weekly Tasks Photography Game and our next meeting is a constructive critique session.

New weekly photography game:

A NEW weekly game is going to start via our Meetings on Wednesdays and our Facebook Group Viewfinders – Through the Lens (Members). We invite you to join in! It will run from Wednesday to Wednesday.

Organised by Glenn, you will pick a task out of a bag at each meeting, and you then have a week to complete the task. Your best effort goes into a folder on the Facebook Group and you can only have one image.

If you cannot make the meeting, you can contact Glenn and he’ll pick a task out of the bag for you. You can use your own imagination, and you can access the web for ideas. The resulting image must be your own new work though, and not stock photos.

weekly tasks game
An example of a task is ‘Haberdashery’ to which Glenn responded with Adidas Man

Everyone should visit the relevant album on the Facebook Group and score the images as they feel fit. That gives us a leader board, which, should alter each week depending on voters.

The voting scores you can give on each image, are:

  • A like 👍🏻= 1 point
  • A love it ❤️= 2 points
  • A Wow 😲= 3 points

Voters can vote up to 7pm each Wednesday night. After that, the voting stops and restarts for the following week.

A Leader Board will be put up the next day so members can see how they are doing.

At the Hedon Viewfinders Christmas Party, there will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes awarded!

If members reading this are not on Facebook, then you will still be able to play. Contact Glenn Stallard for information on email: glenn.stallard@gmx.co.uk and he’ll arrange to pick your task for you.

We will feature regular updates here on the website on the images posted and the Leader Board!

MEETING Wednesday 1st June 2022 – Constructive criticism session

You are invited to come along to the meeting at the Haven Arms at 7pm and bring five images on a memory stick with you (or email them to us in advance). Hand them in at the beginning of the meeting. Your images should be from recent Hedon Viewfinders meetings or the weekly challenges.

We will show the images on the big screen anonymously and invite members to give their views on the images; what they like about them, and how they might be improved. Constructive criticism should be a positive experience leading to the taking of better photos and better post-editing.

If you prefer to email your images in advance then please mark the email subject ‘Constructive Criticism’ and send them to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk

Subjects of the images you bring should be based on your shared experiences with other club members and the 52-Week Photography Challenge.

Examples of the images you might bring from recent meet-ups could be – Water drops, Flying, Panning, Triptych, Bluebells Wood, Black & White, The 5-prop challenge night, etc, (see previous meeting subjects on this website).

Capture the water drops action! Meeting and Week 21 Challenge

The Haven Arms in Hedon on Wednesday for some water drops action! Practical photography session open to all.

THIS WEEK’S 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE is also going to be the practical subject of our meeting Wednesday 7pm 25 May 2022 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH. ALL WELCOME

#ViewfindersChallege #ViewfindersChallengeWeek21

WEEK 21
MAKE A SPLASH – WATER DROPS ACTION!
Take a close up photo of a drop splashing into the water. It’s an old photography project but lots to learn every time you do it. The important thing is to get a regular dripping action so that you can time your shots with more accuracy. You’ll have lots of misses – but when you get a hit, you’ll love it!

The set-up here is something you can do at home by fixing a food bag or similar high up filled with water and putting a small pinprick hole in it. Use a tray full of water to catch your drops. Use your camera on a tripod and manually focus at the point where the splash occurs.

The use of a flash can help capture the action. Put some coloured paper or a bright background behind the tray so that the colour reflects in the water. And time your shots to catch the collision!
Your Challenge: Make a Splash – capture the action!

We are Flying on Wednesday at Hedon Viewfinders!

Something different from Hedon Viewfinders – free, fun and friendly photography club.

At Hedon Viewfinders on Wednesday 18 May 2022 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH.

FLYING

FLYING. This will be both a creative and technical session. Creatively, how can you interpret “Flying”? What props, kit, and gear can you bring to implement your project around the theme of flying?

Think of ‘flying’ in the broadest sense. It might not be just drones, helicopters and UFOs, but might be objects or people frozen in flight, might employ feathers and paper – imagination is key here!

Think about using some of the technical skills we’ve practised in recent weeks to help create your images.

Look out for our related Week 20 Photography Challenge on Monday.

PANNING Week 19 – and at Wednesday’s meeting too

PANNING is our Week 19 photography challenge! And we’ll be discussing this at the next meeting too!

#viewfinderschallenge
#viewfinderschallengeweek19

WEEK 19 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge 2022 – PANNING:
Take a picture of a moving subject whilst moving the camera so that you blur the background to show movement. Shutter speed and handling your camera are crucial here.
It takes a bit of practice, but you can create a relatively sharp subject combined with a background that features motion blur for some stunning images.
Your challenge: Practice, and try to master panning.

Bokeh Night at Hedon Viewfinders

Our Bokeh night will cater for both beginners and more experienced photographers…. and depending on conditions, we’ll have a sunset shoot too!

“Bokeh”

CREATING BOKEH effects will be the aim of Wednesday’s meeting (20 April 2o22).

Bokeh is a Japanese term used in photography to explain the artistic effect of the blur or out of focus elements in an image. Creating bokeh requires careful use of a wide aperture with an appropriate focal length and regard to the distance to the subject and the distance to the background. For newer photographers, this will be an opportunity to learn more about using your camera settings. The more experienced can concentrate on the artistic content of their shots.

Bokeh – At the Haven Arms during our Easter meeting.

The creative blur is created by using out of focus points of light e.g. fairy lights in the background. If you have any, particularly battery-operated sets, please ring them along. A small ornament or toy (for example) can be used as the main subject.

Sunset

In addition to the bokeh session, then if conditions allow, we’ll take a couple of groups out to capture the sunset over Saltend.

Meet-up, Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH at 7pm. ALL WELCOME!

Easter Eggcelence Night at Hedon Viewfinders! Wed 13 April 2022

Using paraphernalia associated with Easter (religious, bunnies, chicks, eggs, etc) then let us create some great images!

ANOTHER FUN NIGHT is expected at Hedon Viewfinders as we celebrate Easter! We need thinking caps on folks as we ask photographers to come and create scenes that would look fitting on an Easter Card!

Chicken or Egg? By Michelle Atkinson.

Using any of the symbols or paraphernalia associated with Easter (religious, bunnies, chicks, eggs, etc) then let us create some great images: Serious and moody, fun and humorous, mono or colour, the genre choice of the scene is yours.

Being a school holiday, then Wednesday 13 April at Viewfinders will be a good family photography night with an opportunity to make some Easter props on the night.

Bring your props and help make this another memorable night at Hedon Viewfinders – and rumour has it that we have a very special guest in attendance!?

WEEK 14 OF 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE – THE RULE OF THIRDS:

Rule of Thirds – a useful guide for composing your photos!

WEEK 14 OF 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE
RULE OF THIRDS:

Good composition is the key to a good photo. Where you place the main subject and supporting elements in the photograph can be a critical choice. The Rule of Thirds is a simple guide to help you make those choices.
When you take a shot, think about what you see on screen or through the viewfinder and split that up mentally into Left, Middle and Bottom, and also Top, Middle and Bottom. In that grid of 9 squares, there are four key points where the lines cross and it is these areas that are the key points of interest. If you place your key subject in any of these four key points, then you are on your way to a better photo. A natural inclination for new photographers is to place the key subject in the centre of the frame – but do try and avoid that and as a simple reminder to use the Rule of Thirds, think to yourself “avoid the middle!”.
In landscape photography, experienced photographers will often split their scenes up into distinctive thirds.
The camera manufacturers consider the Rule of Thirds so important, that many cameras can opt to display a Rule of Thirds overlay screen to aid your composition.
Although not a real ‘rule’ – there are no rules in photography – think of the Rule of Thirds as something that can help make your images stronger and more pleasing. Those of you who crop your photos afterwards – then crop using the Rule of Thirds.
Your challenge for Week 14 – practice using the Rule of Thirds.

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock.

And do please send in your images associated with these challenges. We will publish them on these pages. E-mail them to

viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com.

EACH WEEK for 2022, we will introduce a new Challenge, Task or Idea to stimulate you into taking new photographs. It’s just for fun. We hope you join in each week. If you’ve had a go at one of the ideas before, then don’t miss it out; instead, try to approach the challenge in a new way.

Join in 0n our Facebook Group page with the chat and banter about these challenges; get tips and advice from other members. We also have a WhatsApp group – contact us for help in joining.

Prints Night. Hedon Viewfinders Wed 6 April 2022

Hedon Viewfinders at 7pm on Wed 6 April 2022, Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH.

PRINTS NIGHT

FOLLOWING OUR SUCCESSFUL and popular last few meetings, we thought the time was ripe to see the work resulting from these.

PRINTS NIGHTbring up to five prints as examples of your work. Perhaps those that you are proud of, or maybe those that you feel serve as learning examples.

Bring up to five prints up to A4 and they will be set out for tabletop display. We hope that given the chance, some of you will choose to talk about your photographs and how you ‘got’ the shots, and perhaps answer questions or ask them, and offer tips to others in the room.

For those who find getting prints difficult, then we can view some photographs via the computer and projector screen if you bring your five photos on memory sticks.

These were sent in by Keith Maddon following our Flowers Photography meeting. Two of the photos are also in response to our Backlight Week 13 Photo Challenge #viewfinderschallengeweek13.
