Drinks photography… but with a creative twist!

DRINKS PHOTOGRAPHY NIGHT – but with a creative twist! Building on the tabletop work we’ve done in the last few weeks then the idea developed at our last meeting of doing a product photography shoot

Building on the tabletop work we’ve done in the last few weeks then the idea developed at our last meeting of doing a product photography shoot on Wednesday 15 September 2021 around DRINKS (glasses, bottles, cocktails, branded products, etc).

But we want to look at composing shots with an extra element – a creative twist. Not just the subject but can we create something eye-catchingly different? For Example, not just a bottle perhaps, but how might we involve water, shadows, bokeh, etc? Thinking caps on folks!

Bring your own imagination and props, but we will have some arranged.

Haven Arms, Hedon, 7pm on Wednesday 15 September 2021. All Welcome. Free, fun and friendly!

Oil and water photography

IT’S AN OLD FAVOURITE at the Club on Wednesday 8 September 7pm at the Haven Arms; we will be doing Oil and Water Photography!

IT’S AN OLD FAVOURITE at the Club on Wednesday 8 September 2021 7pm at the Haven Arms; we will be doing Oil and Water Photography!

You don’t need much. A camera. A tripod. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a macro lens is useful (or extension tubes for your kit lens) but you can always crop your photos with other lenses or other types of camera.

You need a small amount of cooking oil to use. You’ll need a clear, clean glass container to put your oil and water in – and some way to hold your container securely in the air so that you can place colourful paper, cloth, items, etc under the container. You need to light those items using a flash, continuous lighting, or a powerful torch.

You fill your container with water. Add the oil. Then you’re ready to start shooting.

Good fun. And no two setups are really alike.

Low light photography and indoor light painting.

This week’s meeting will concentrate on low-light photography and indoor light painting.

By moving the light, or by moving the camera, the aim will be to produce some creative images. We’ll be working in low light conditions so bring your tripods (we’ll have some to lend) and torches to see what you are doing.

We’ll discuss your camera settings so everyone can get the most out of this session.

There will be a variety of professional printing papers available. Up to A4. £1 a print.

Print Circle?

One of the ideas raised in the past at Hedon Viewfinders has been to set up a group Print Circle.

This would need a small group of interested people to work (and to keep it manageable) who would meet regularly to look at a print from each of its members with a view to offering a constructive critique on each image and advise on the quality of the printing and the media (papers) used. The idea would be to improve the photography and print presentation of its members.

An active Print Circle would be really useful to those who aspire to enter more competitions, exhibitions or go for distinctions.

The Cow – Hedon Viewfinders 4th editing challenge

The Cow. Results of our 4th Editing Challenge.

We asked you to re-edit our basic image of a cow in front of Saltend Chemicals Park.

The results are in. There are fewer entries than normal for our editing challenge, but more people actually took part in the challenge at the Club meeting on Wed 30th June. These are those who emailed their results in.

First up is Paul Benson.

How I did it:

  • 1.  Applied the artistic filter ‘Poster Edges’.
  • 2.  Cropped the image to portrait format.
  • 3.  Increased the contrast slightly.
  • 4.  Increased saturation slightly.

Next is Janet Bucknall with her Jurassic Cow!

How I did it:

Janet says she found some new stuff on her computer and just enjoyed herself by adding fun images.

This is Lynn Leedham’s framed bovine creation.

How I did it:

Enhanced cut and framed using Inpixio Editing.

Edit on original by Ray Duffill.

How I did it.

In Elements, I sharpened by using the High Pass Filter and Overlay blend mode. Then a Hue & Saturation Adjustment layer to boost the colour. Cropped.

This is Dave Hook’s edit.

How I did it:

I used Canon compositing software to create this image. I used two of my own existing photographs. I cropped the image and increased saturation.

And this is “The Cow” by Maggie Wingfield:

How I did it:

Using ‘Photoeditor’ on my laptop, I selected mid-level posterisation and placed a different sky background I then inserted the bird using ‘LightX’ app on my iPhone.

We hope you enjoy seeing how these editing challenges are undertaken. There really are no limits other than imagination to what we can do with a basic image.
