Black & White Week and Team Challenge Club Night

Black & White is the Week 17 Challenge… and there is a B&W aspect to our meeting on Wednesday too!

Club News – It’s Black & White Week 17 in the 52-Week Challenge 2022

WEEK 17 of 52-Week Photography Challenge

It is black & white week this week, and while in simple terms that might mean an image where all the colour has been removed, we want you to go further than this: Consider the contrasts between dark and light, look at how shadows fall, set out to create mood and atmosphere as you use the 256 shades of grey between true black and true white.
If you can turn your camera to black & white, then do so for this week. When you share and publish your images this week, tell us about the advantages of black & white photography.
Your challenge: Capture black & white images this week.

Remember to use the hashtags to make your photos easier to find on social media: #ViewfindersChallenge #ViewfindersChallengeWeek17

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock. And do please send in your images associated with these challenges. We will publish them on these pages. E-mail them to or

52 Week Photography Challenge 2022

Team Challenge at Club Night Wed 27 April 2022

A five-prop challenge takes place at Hedon Viewfinders meet up on Wednesday 27 April. We will split into teams and each will face the same five props to photograph. This is a creative challenge but a technical spanner will be thrown into the works as an additional random condition is added. As each team tackles each prop, they will be given one additional thing to consider as well!

The five table props will be a:

  • Buddha statue,
  • a stone bottle,
  • an artist’s wooden mannequin,
  • a polystyrene head,
  • and crystal ducks.

The different random conditions that each team will face when considering their composition will be one of the following:

  • make a silhouette,
  • make a shadow,
  • use a reflection,
  • use additional colour lighting,
  • or make black & white.

Knowing the props and the additional conditions you will have to meet will help you prepare for this fun, creative and technical challenge.

Team Challenge Night, Haven Arms, Havenside, 7pm on Wed 27 April 2022.

Hedon Viewfinders Club News Autumn 2019

Team Picture Quiz:
The next meeting takes place on Wednesday 2 October 2019 and is a Team Picture Quiz. A social event, this will involve splitting up into teams to help solve the answers to the ‘what’ and ‘where’ picture clues. Photos of unusual places and taken from unusual angles, your team will have to work out the answers. Devised by Glenn Stallard, who was also responsible for planning the very enjoyable Team Scavenger Hunt earlier this year, it promises to be lots of fun! Meet for 7pm start at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH.

Santa’s Grotto:
Once again we’ve been asked to do the Father Christmas grotto photographs at Hedon Christmas Lights at Hedon Town Hall on Friday, 29 November 2019. This is something that Hedon Viewfinders has done for the last couple of years in collaboration with Hedon Town Council. It raises money for the Mayor’s charity on the town’s busiest night of the year. Hopefully, it’s going to be a team event again and a great opportunity for members to join in both the fun of the picture-taking and also the organisation of the event on the night i.e. liaison with the families and children – it’s very busy! Anyone can get involved, it’s a great chance to practice portrait photography even if it’s not your normal genre, and of course, you’ll be part of the great Christmas atmosphere. Any offers of help appreciated – volunteers need to be available between 4pm and 9pm (but we can organise shifts if we get enough volunteers). As mentioned previously, it’s a busy night, but it is a great deal of fun. If you can volunteer on the night contact Ray at soon, please.

Christmas Party:
Speaking of Christmas, the last meeting of the year is our Christmas Party on Wednesday 11 December 2019. It’ll be a hot buffet format (rather than a sit-down meal) with our own Christmas party entertainment and fun.  Costs will be £10 per head. Invite your partners/friends. Monies/bookings will be collected at our meetings or contact us to make other arrangements.

Joint Meeting with Young Farmers:
An early ‘heads-up’ for next year. We are holding a joint practical photography session (props and experimentation) with this youth organisation on Wednesday 29 January 2020 at 7pm. This is not our normal Wednesday session and will be held in a different venue. Watch out for further details nearer the date.

Programme for 2020:
We are now seeking YOUR IDEAS as to our PROGRAMME FOR 2020. What would you like to see the Club doing in the New Year? Do let us know your ideas for meetings (practicals and speakers), events and field trips.

Other events news – It’s HIP Festival in October (4th – 27th). Putting Hull on the international map for photography!

Submissions (including photographs) are now invited for the Ferens Open Exhibition 2020. Deadline 6th October 2019.

Exhibitions Coordinator:
The Club is looking for a volunteer who can take the lead responsibility for arranging the club exhibitions. We have some exciting opportunities for working with community partners to hold some innovative exhibitions in the New Year. This role involves working with other members, venues and organisations to provide opportunities for the Club to display its members’ work. You don’t necessarily need experience (although that would be beneficial) as we have the expertise within the group to help, but we need a named-person and contact, a person with imagination and drive, who can coordinate the process of staging an exhibition from concept to realisation.
We’ll have some informal discussions about this role over the next few weeks, with a view to starting in the New Year. But do make contact if you are interested.

Constructive Critique and Printing.

Print Circle:
Is anyone interested in forming a self-help Print Circle? This would need about 10 people to work (and to keep it manageable) who would meet perhaps once a quarter to look at a print from each of its members with a view to offering constructive critique on each image and advise on the quality of the printing. The idea would be to improve our photography and print presentation. I think this would be really useful to those who aspire to enter more competitions, exhibitions or go for distinctions. We could look at using the Haven Arms on Tuesday nights for this. If this proves to be useful, then there is nothing to stop us from setting up more than one Print Circle. Again do make contact if you are interested.

Do visit the Key Dates web page and see what’s planned for the rest of the year.

Viewfinders Meet-up – Team Challenge event!

HEDON Viewfinders next meets on Wednesday, September 5 2018 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, in Hedon. The Meet-up will include a special Team Challenge event which will offer some fast and furious fun whilst challenging each of us, with our team’s support, to come up with a different approach to photographing something.

HEDON Viewfinders next meets 7pm on Wednesday, September 5 2018 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, in Hedon. The Meet-up will include a special Team Challenge event which will offer some fast and furious fun whilst challenging each of us, with our team’s support, to come up with a different approach to photographing something.

Those present will form into evenly-matched teams and each will be faced with the same set of challenges to photograph subjects or objects – you will be racing against the clock, and each team member needs to have taken their own distinctive photograph from each challenge; the outcome of each will be a team set of images.

This is something different for Viewfinders and promises to be a fascinating exercise that depends on us all taking photographs; so bring your cameras and kit lenses.

The aim will be to reveal each Team-set of photographs at our next meeting on the 19 September and decide on the winning team entry.

The meeting will also update members on progress with our funding campaign and discuss our major new prize competition.

All Welcome. Attendance is not restricted in anyway. Free, fun and friendly!

Hedon Viewfinders will interest photographers of all levels regardless of ability, image making device (whether camera or phone), kit or equipment. Novices particularly encouraged. Hedon’s free, fun and friendly photography group.
