Week 39 – Consider Environmental Photography

A well-managed environment….? Environmental Photography needs to be thoughtful photography too.

IT’S AUTUMN now in this hemisphere – but where is autumn? The seasons are apparently being affected by unusual weather conditions brought on by climate change. So the recent heat waves for example caused some trees to shed their leaves prematurely creating an early blanket of autumn ground colour in summer!

In response to these and many other effects which we all see around us, WEEK 39 of the 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE is to consider ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY.

Photography is a powerful way to capture the beauty of the world through landscapes, seascapes, people and places, and wildlife. But photography is also a powerful medium for revealing how things are changing and the threats that local communities and the world are facing. Powerful imagery can express emotion and help motivate people into action and highlight the opportunities that exist to make a difference. The message or impact of your images is therefore of utmost importance.

Your challenge this week is to take on the role of an environmental photographer. Look for the changes that are taking place in your local area or working environment, and help document these. Consider how your photos might be viewed over a period of time and used for historical comparison and as important data, charting environmental change. Consider the positives too; what has been done to improve things.

No trees to hug!

Your challenge this week to step into the shoes of an Environmental Photographer might be life-changing. It could last well beyond the week of this challenge. It’s a thoughtful genre where the presentation of your images and who you present them to, are important considerations too.

Note and tip: Normally our challenges encourage you to take just new photos – and that is still encouraged this week. However, the nature of this week’s challenge might prompt you to use older images as comparative photos in a series.

Featured image: The image of Saltend Chemicals Works (October 2019) may look dramatic and the idea of ‘smoking’ towers might be seen as alarming. However, vapour releases from the towers are quite normal. With bankside reeds having just been cut then the image does perhaps convey a well-managed environment? The context of your photo and additional research you might carry out is important too.

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock (unless necessary for the particular challenge).

And do please send in your images associated with these challenges – or your other activities as a Club Member. We will publish them on these pages.

E-mail them to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com.

Fairy Tales – Creative Photography Challenge Week 35

Heigh-Ho! Heigh-Ho! It’s off to photography we go!….

WEEK 35 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge
FAIRY TALE PHOTOGRAPHY

“Once upon a time” we used to read Fairy Tales. And after an adventure, a journey or a trial or task, good would triumph against evil and the characters would “all live happily ever after!”.
Think of the elements that make up a typical fairy tale; think of key characters, scenery, costumes and props. Create your own fairy tale scenes and take your photography through the looking glass, down the rabbit hole or into the wardrobe and on to the next level!
This is a creative photography challenge that might sit well as a group project or as a photography club night.

Some Fairy Tales do suggest obvious ideas; Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, etc, but once your imagination is spurred, then this should be an enjoyable creative challenge!

Street Photography – Your Week 25 Challenge

WEEK 25 of the 52 Week Photography Challenge – STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.

Show us a slice of life in your neighbourhood, village, town or city centre. The subject may be something quirky or different, but this type of photography can also help to make the hum-drum into something special; particularly by paying attention to the lighting conditions and the time of day. Street photographers often tend to make full use of black and white in their work, but this is not a requirement. People make good subjects whether adopting a candid camera approach or posed photographs.

Your Challenge: Explore the genre of street photography.

Mike Covell talk revealed… and Week 22 Challenge: Jubilee!

“East Yorkshire Defences in World Wars 1 and 2” is our talk by Mike Covell, and perhaps unsurprisingly our Week 22 Challenge is the #PlatinumJubilee

East Yorkshire Defences in World Wars 1 and 2

FOLLOWING the recent poll then the talk by Mike Covell (author, historian, researcher) most requested by members is “East Yorkshire Defences in World Wars 1 and 2“. The talk by Mike will take place on Wednesday 15 June at the Haven Arms promptly at 7pm. Members and visitors are asked to arrive early to find their seats and get their drinks ready for a 7pm start.

Take a walk along the coast or the countryside and the likelihood of finding remnants of the defences put in place to protect the country from invasion is higher than you might think. Some are better preserved than others, and of course, as photographers, many of these make exciting subjects to discover and make images from!

The meeting is FREE to attend, but we will be making a collection to cover costs.

Week 22 of 52-Week Challenge – The Jubilee!

Millions will be marking the Platinum Jubilee over the next few days. Your challenge this week is not only to capture the events in images but to record those parts of the celebrations that might be overlooked by others. Millions of photos will be taken during the long bank holiday weekend, whilst many will sit on phones or camera memory cards remaining unseen, others will be pored over by future generations as unique pictures capturing the mood, atmosphere and characters involved. You know what YOUR challenge is for this Week 22!

Black & White Week and Team Challenge Club Night

Black & White is the Week 17 Challenge… and there is a B&W aspect to our meeting on Wednesday too!

Club News – It’s Black & White Week 17 in the 52-Week Challenge 2022

WEEK 17 of 52-Week Photography Challenge
BLACK & WHITE WEEK

It is black & white week this week, and while in simple terms that might mean an image where all the colour has been removed, we want you to go further than this: Consider the contrasts between dark and light, look at how shadows fall, set out to create mood and atmosphere as you use the 256 shades of grey between true black and true white.
If you can turn your camera to black & white, then do so for this week. When you share and publish your images this week, tell us about the advantages of black & white photography.
Your challenge: Capture black & white images this week.

Remember to use the hashtags to make your photos easier to find on social media: #ViewfindersChallenge #ViewfindersChallengeWeek17

Team Challenge at Club Night Wed 27 April 2022

A five-prop challenge takes place at Hedon Viewfinders meet up on Wednesday 27 April. We will split into teams and each will face the same five props to photograph. This is a creative challenge but a technical spanner will be thrown into the works as an additional random condition is added. As each team tackles each prop, they will be given one additional thing to consider as well!

The five table props will be a:

  • Buddha statue,
  • a stone bottle,
  • an artist’s wooden mannequin,
  • a polystyrene head,
  • and crystal ducks.

The different random conditions that each team will face when considering their composition will be one of the following:

  • make a silhouette,
  • make a shadow,
  • use a reflection,
  • use additional colour lighting,
  • or make black & white.

Knowing the props and the additional conditions you will have to meet will help you prepare for this fun, creative and technical challenge.

WEEK 14 OF 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE – THE RULE OF THIRDS:

Rule of Thirds – a useful guide for composing your photos!

WEEK 14 OF 52-WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE
RULE OF THIRDS:

Good composition is the key to a good photo. Where you place the main subject and supporting elements in the photograph can be a critical choice. The Rule of Thirds is a simple guide to help you make those choices.
When you take a shot, think about what you see on screen or through the viewfinder and split that up mentally into Left, Middle and Bottom, and also Top, Middle and Bottom. In that grid of 9 squares, there are four key points where the lines cross and it is these areas that are the key points of interest. If you place your key subject in any of these four key points, then you are on your way to a better photo. A natural inclination for new photographers is to place the key subject in the centre of the frame – but do try and avoid that and as a simple reminder to use the Rule of Thirds, think to yourself “avoid the middle!”.
In landscape photography, experienced photographers will often split their scenes up into distinctive thirds.
The camera manufacturers consider the Rule of Thirds so important, that many cameras can opt to display a Rule of Thirds overlay screen to aid your composition.
Although not a real ‘rule’ – there are no rules in photography – think of the Rule of Thirds as something that can help make your images stronger and more pleasing. Those of you who crop your photos afterwards – then crop using the Rule of Thirds.
Your challenge for Week 14 – practice using the Rule of Thirds.

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock.
