Light painting night at Hedon Viewfinders – Wed 23 Jan 2019

Light painting night:

After the success and enjoyment of our last light painting night, we are having another go at our next meeting on Wednesday 23 January 2019 at the Haven Arms (Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH) starting at 7pm. The main light painting exercises will take place outside, but we have alternative ideas should the weather be too bad.

Dramatic shots are available remarkably easily on cameras where you can control shutter speed, aperture and ISO, but mounting on a tripod is recommended. However, at our last session, members also got good shots on mobile phones too.

Glenn Stallard will be leading the session and his advice is to “Wrap up warm! And there’ll be advice for members on which camera settings to use.”

Exhibition 2019:

The Hedon Viewfinders exhibition 2019 takes place from Wednesday April 24 to Saturday June 15 at the Hedon Museum. The theme of the Exhibition is “Hedon” and we are asking members to submit original and new work that reveals the ancient town in a new light. Prints (approximately 20-30) to be displayed in the exhibition are likely to be framed and mounted up to 50x40cm but we will issue further advice on this. For those members from Hull and surrounding towns and villages, we will organise some Hedon photo walks, and otherwise issue guidance on getting your shots of the town; its characteristics, flora and fauna, features and people, etc.

We will be exhibiting downstairs at the Hedon Museum whilst upstairs will be an exhibition by Paul Berriff OBE of his iconic photos from the 1960’s. Paul is an award-winning photographer and documentary film maker – and I’m pleased to announce that Paul will be speaking at a Hedon Viewfinders special meeting on Wednesday 17 April on his extraordinary life experiences. This will be ticketed event and should not be missed!

Hedon Viewfinders will interest photographers of all levels; regardless of ability, whatever image making device kit or equipment you own. Novices particularly encouraged. Hedon’s free, fun and friendly photography group.

Meetings, competitions and exhibition

Happy New Year! 2019 gets off to its formal start on Wednesday 9 January with our first meeting 7pm at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH. It will be a Props Night – a chance to experiment. This will be a great night for all those ‘wannabe photographers’ that got new cameras at Christmas to come along as well! All Welcome.

Bring in your interesting objects (ornaments, toys, instruments, flowers, etc) and interesting kit and help create some photographic opportunities to share! If you need to get in early to set your prop up and claim table space, we’ll be open from 6:30pm.

We are currently arranging further events nights, field trips and speakers – so please do pass on any ideas or suggestions you have got.

Competition: Our Facebook group has a weekly competition based on a letter of the alphabet and the winner of each gets to have their photograph as the header of the page in the following week. Whilst this has been successful on Facebook with 1,563 images being posted over the letters A to R by 55 participants, we would also like to invite our members not on Facebook to get involved. This week’s letter is and the weekly competition runs from Wednesday to the following Wednesday (entries by 10pm each Tuesday). If you want to take part and are not on Facebook, then we can e-mail out the competition details to you and alert you to each competition, and you can send your entries by e-mail – just get in touch.

52 Weekly Photography Ideas for 2019: Whilst not a competition, our new ideas page will be updated every Monday with a new prompt to creative photography. You can join in on social media using the hashtag #viewfinders52week(WeekNumber) or send in your photographs in response to each idea to us via e-mail.

EXHIBITION 2019 takes place at the Hedon Museum from Wed April 24th to Sat June 15th. Look out for more details – but the theme is “Hedon” and you should be planning now to take your new photographs according to that theme. You should also note our meeting date on Wed 17 April 2019 – at 7pm we have a very special event taking place linked to the exhibition (you don’t want to miss it!).

Look forward to seeing many of you next Wednesday.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2019

Our first meeting of 2019 takes place on Wednesday 9 January, 7pm at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH and will be a ‘Props Night – a chance to experiment’.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Hedon Viewfinders and all the very best for 2019.

We have had an interesting year and most of you will have your favourite sessions, meetings or field trips to remember. In particular I enjoyed our Film Noir night when we relied very much on people bringing along their own props, kit and lights and we managed to create some great images from the constructed scenes. Others have expressed how much they enjoyed the talk from the Crime Scenes Investigator, and the unique presentation we had on the medieval Paull Holme Tower and our unique look at the place when its new battlements were restored. The trip to Hull Fair provided a great opportunity for some creative photography as did our Graffiti Hunt around the ‘Bankside Gallery’ and other sites. Our Halloween ‘dry ice’ night continues to be popular. If you have your favourites from 2018, then do let us know, because we hope to provide similar photographic opportunities in the New Year, plus running some of these favourites again.

As an informal club we don’t charge membership fees, so we do very much rely on our community of ‘member’ photographers to pull events off and to stage our events. So a massive ‘thank you’ to you all for your goodwill and participation which makes Hedon Viewfinders such a successful and enjoyable group to belong to. Our byline ‘free, fun and friendly’ is very fitting I believe.

If you need to get in early to set your prop up and claim table space, we’ll be open from 6:30pm. Some of the photo opportunities we could set up are: – water/liquid drops or splash photography, mixing of oil and water effects, bubbles, some macro, polariser effects, rainy windows, lensballs and other optical props – and towards the end of the night some smoke photography? This is very much a chance to experiment – and if there is something you would really like to try, but don’t know where to start – then do get in touch and we’ll see what we can arrange!

EXHIBITION 2019 – Just a reminder – the theme for our Exhibition for next year Wed April 24th to Sat June 15th at Hedon Museum is “Hedon”. We want images that stand out; offer a different perspective perhaps, but also reflect the various skills and genres enjoyed by those in Viewfinders. There will be a category for best images taken on a mobile phone (includes iPad, tablet, etc) too. New original work.

Due to limited space this year we will have to initiate a selection process for images submitted. This is just an EARLY NOTICE so you can start planning/taking your shots. More information in the New Year.

Light Painting Night – Photography fun in the dark!

HEDON VIEWFINDERS meets again on Wednesday 14 November 2018 and our theme for the evening is “Light Painting” or playing with light! 7pm at The Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH.

HEDON VIEWFINDERS meets again on Wednesday 14 November 2018 and our theme for the evening is “Light Painting” or playing with light!

Lots of special effects images can be created when light sources are moved in the dark. And at the Haven Arms on Wednesday (starting at 7pm) we are going to experiment (inside, and outside weather permitting) with the techniques behind creating these photos.

Light painting, painting with light, light drawing, or light art performance photography are terms that describe photographic techniques of moving a light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or space, or to shine light at the camera to ‘draw’, or by moving the camera itself during exposure of light sources.

Never done this before? Then come along to Viewfinders and have a go! Our meetings aim to be fun, whilst learning more about photography.

Send us your best club image – HIP Festival Networking

SEND US YOUR BEST CLUB IMAGE PLEASE!

HIPFest Photography Group Networking.

UPDATE: The Networking Event will now be on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October, 10am – 5pm. Also an evening session on the Friday 5 October (the opening of HIP Fest) from 6pm – 8pm. Our presence at the event will focus around a stall that we need to staff. So if you can volunteer some time during the long weekend, your help would be appreciated and we can arrange shifts.

On Saturday and Sunday 13th and 14th October we have been invited to take part in a networking event with other photography groups (both actual groups that meet regularly and online groups) as part of the Hull International Photography Festival (HIPFest 2018). An inter-club networking event is being organised that will include a slideshow being put together and we’ve been asked to submit up to 30 images.

These images do not have to fit a theme, but it has been suggested that it would be nice to keep a general theme of photos taken in Hull and surrounding areas. Additionally, I would suggest our photos might reflect the club’s activities i.e. taken at our meetings, on trips. part of our A-D or weekly competitions, etc. So we need to gather together at least 20 but not more than 30 images that will be displayed on a 6×4 foot (landscape orientation) projection screen at points throughout the weekend.

CAN WE START by people sending me BY EMAIL please their favourite/best photograph (needs to be high resolution) with your name as part of the filename please.

For this weekend event we won’t need HIPfest passes, but I’d encourage people to buy them anyway (£5) to be able to take advantage of most of the HIPFest exhibitions and workshops (starts Friday October 5th).

I’D NEED YOUR PHOTOS THIS WEEK PLEASE, or by Wed 26 September at the very latest.

More at our meeting on Wed 19 September, 7pm at Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon.
