Photo Book for 2019.

There has been a suggestion from one of our members that we produce a yearbook of photographs for 2019.

It’s imagined that it would be an A4 size book that would feature at last one ‘best of year’ image from all those members of Viewfinders that wish to take part. The book would be a celebration of the variety of work made by club members.

These photobooks are usually really well produced and the publication of a Yearbook would be a great way to showcase the club and could be brought to meetings, displayed in exhibitions, etc.

There would be no cost to members, would just need high-quality digital images. Your job now is to sort through your best images of this year and decide which is your favourite for the book!

Look out for the call to submit your best images of 2019.

Whitby Goth Weekend 2019.

We’ve got a few members who have expressed an interest in going to the Whitby Goth Weekend on Sunday 27 October 2019. So this is just plugging that event and presenting information to members.

If you’ve never been before, then (weather permitting) it’s a great event to practise taking street portraits. It’s very much a friendly ‘partnership’ between the goths, steampunks and photographers who are there in their hundreds too! Mostly, the immaculately-dressed characters are more than willing to pose, just ask politely.

We encourage people to car-share, etc to share, cut travel costs. If you have a lift to offer or want a lift, then email viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk and we’ll try to match people up.

HIP Fest 2019

Hull International Photography Festival is on until the end of the month (Sun 27 October) – a great opportunity to visit a magnificent set of exhibitions at Princes Quay. Nine galleries and the centre of Princes Quay are displaying 14 exhibitions.

Hedon Viewfinders – News of Photographic Opportunities

Some great opportunities are available for enthusiastic photographers. Via this website we hope to pass on some of these opportunities and other news, particularly to reach those not on social media networks. This time: Street Photography, Volunteer Sculpture Photographers, field trips, HIP Fest.

The Facebook Group has become a busy place for quickly sharing photographic news and opportunities. Via the website we hope to pass on some of these opportunities and other news particularly to reach those not on social media networks.

The Art of Street Photography with Magnum photographers.

This is an online course by the famous Magnum Photos on Street Photography which is being promoted by the RPS (Royal Photographic Society) in the UK. It looks impressive with seven well-known, world-class photographers participating in ten on-demand video lessons for $99 (about £81.50 at the current exchange rate according to Google). This might be of interest to some of you.

Volunteer Photographers – Sculpture Project.

This might be an interesting opportunity for some. Volunteer Photographers are needed to photograph sculptures in Yorkshire. This is a formal voluntary role with Art UK which includes training in the role on Art UK’s requirements.

Volunteer Photographers take images of outdoor sculptures in public ownership in their local area. They record sculptures in parks, town centres, shopping centres and in rural locations. The images are for use on the Art UK website, which will eventually record all sculptures in public ownership – indoor and outdoor.

Art UK is now looking for more volunteer photographers in other areas of the UK – including Yorkshire.

The volunteer photographer role is suitable for people who are already proficient photographers and have the required specifications of equipment: a minimum 12 megapixel camera capable of shooting images in RAW, and RAW image processing software on their computer. You need to have Microsoft Excel and Word (or compatible programs).
Full training would be provided at a workshop which will focus on the practical aspects of photographing the sculpture and file processing; it would not be aiming to teach you how to use your camera.

Updates to our Events Programme:

At our regular meeting on Wednesday 27 November 2019 (in a change from the previously advertised programme) we are delighted to welcome Dave Prideaux who will be giving us a fascinating insight into Glass slide photography.

Note also that we have included our annual outing to Hull Fair in the programme which will be taking place on Tuesday 8 October 2019.

Other photography field trips in the pipeline being arranged by members, include a visit to Northern Studios and another to a Birds Sanctuary. We are looking at a “Fungi Foray” with an expert on fungi, for Sunday afternoon 6 October 2019.

If you have ideas for a field trip, then suggest dates that you’d like members to consider, make some provisional enquiries with with the venue/host and get back in touch with us to promote amongst members.

Other News:

HIP Fest – A reminder that the biggest local photography event each year Hull International Photography Festival will be back again 4th-27th October 2019.

Send us your best club image – HIP Festival Networking

SEND US YOUR BEST CLUB IMAGE PLEASE!

HIPFest Photography Group Networking.

UPDATE: The Networking Event will now be on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October, 10am – 5pm. Also an evening session on the Friday 5 October (the opening of HIP Fest) from 6pm – 8pm. Our presence at the event will focus around a stall that we need to staff. So if you can volunteer some time during the long weekend, your help would be appreciated and we can arrange shifts.

On Saturday and Sunday 13th and 14th October we have been invited to take part in a networking event with other photography groups (both actual groups that meet regularly and online groups) as part of the Hull International Photography Festival (HIPFest 2018). An inter-club networking event is being organised that will include a slideshow being put together and we’ve been asked to submit up to 30 images.

These images do not have to fit a theme, but it has been suggested that it would be nice to keep a general theme of photos taken in Hull and surrounding areas. Additionally, I would suggest our photos might reflect the club’s activities i.e. taken at our meetings, on trips. part of our A-D or weekly competitions, etc. So we need to gather together at least 20 but not more than 30 images that will be displayed on a 6×4 foot (landscape orientation) projection screen at points throughout the weekend.

CAN WE START by people sending me BY EMAIL please their favourite/best photograph (needs to be high resolution) with your name as part of the filename please.

For this weekend event we won’t need HIPfest passes, but I’d encourage people to buy them anyway (£5) to be able to take advantage of most of the HIPFest exhibitions and workshops (starts Friday October 5th).

I’D NEED YOUR PHOTOS THIS WEEK PLEASE, or by Wed 26 September at the very latest.

More at our meeting on Wed 19 September, 7pm at Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon.
