Paull Holme Tower visit

You need to let us know you are coming IN ADVANCE, please!

The 700-year-old Paull Holme Tower was once part of a grand manor house complex and is a Grade 1 listed ancient monument. It was opened to the public for the first time ever in September 2011 and quite simply was a wreck and classed by English Heritage as ‘at risk’ of being lost forever.

However, through the efforts of Simon Taylor, who bought the tower and pledged to do something with it, the monument was saved and funding secured to shore the building up and latterly to construct a new roof and restore the crenelations (battlements).

Hedon Viewfinders members first visited the tower as a club in 2016 before the construction work. This next visit by the club is on Wednesday (10 August 2022) and should allow us to see the work that has been done and afford some rooftop views to those braver members wishing to climb up to the top.

It will be a fascinating visit. However, because it is a very old building (it’s not a refined tourist attraction) then entry to the tower will be at members’ own risk. Should you choose not to enter then there are still some great photography opportunities to be had from the outside.

Members are advised to meet at Paull Holme Strays Nature Reserve car park in time for a 6.45pm short walk to the tower (we will arrange to ferry those to the site who find the 5-minute walk difficult – let us know in advance).

Directions to the Nature Reserve: From the A1033 follow the signs for Fort Paull and then head south on Thorngumbald Road. The entrance to the car park is on the right just less than a mile after St Andrew’s Church. Get there ready to leave for the walk to the tower by 6.45pm, please.

If you are planning to attend, and haven’t informed us already, then please email on viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com to confirm your intention to attend.

Photography and Journalism, Darkroom Photography, Alternative Printing Techniques, AND Film & Vintage Night. Field Trips – Hedon Photo Walk and Fungi Foray.

POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE:

Photography and Journalism:

The speaker at our next meeting on Wednesday 4 September is IAN DAY FRPS. Ian is the Deputy Editor of The Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (FRPS) for his services to press photography.

His presentation is all about the work of his team of photographers and the images they make and gives a great insight into documentary photography and journalism.

The meeting takes place at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8EF on Wednesday 4 September 2019 starting at 7pm prompt.

A meeting will still take place.

Darkroom Photography, Alternative Printing Techniques, AND Film & Vintage Night.

We are also pleased to announce that Tobias Beach-Wyld (Toby) comes to the club on Wednesday 18 September to tell us all about Darkroom Photography but also alternative printing techniques. To mark Toby’s visit, the club is declaring the night ‘Film & Vintage Night’ and we are asking you to bring in your old film cameras and kit (whether in use or not), and particularly any ‘vintage’ cameras. We’ll provide some table space to display your pre-digital kit.

“I’m sure this will attract those film buffs who are looking for old kit, so could provide an opportunity for private selling, buying and swapping. Also  we’ll try and source some new film stock for people to buy.” – Ray Duffill

You never know, this might prompt some of you to take up or re-take up film photography!! Plus old cameras, I think, make beautiful photography subjects….

The meeting takes place at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8EF on Wednesday 18 September 2019 starting at 7pm prompt.

Field Trips:

Hedon Photo Walk – Sunday 15 September – Meet at the Haven Arms Car Park at 11am.

Torquay and The English Riviera

Learning about seascapes (Isle of Wight).

As well as our meetings which aim to be a mix of both practical and instructional content, we also aim to provide opportunities to get out and about with our cameras, visit exhibitions, attend events of interest, and to take photographs in the company of other enthusiastic photographers. Our outings might be an hour catching a sunset somewhere, full day trips, or indeed a fully-fledged photo holiday.

On Friday 7 June 2019 we are taking part in a 4-day trip to Torquay and the English Riviera as part of a National Holidays breakaway. This is the latest in such trips which have seen us visiting Liverpool (inc The Terracotta Warriors exhibition), Durham, and the Isle of Wight amongst other places. The advantage of these trips is that you can focus as much time as you want on taking photographs of interesting places and people, and concentrate on your composition, technique, etc, in the knowledge that everyone else with you is keen to do the same.

The Torquay 4-day Special Breakaway with National Holidays coaches costs £149 includes an excursion to Dartmouth and whilst we can’t guarantee the weather, offers both beautiful seaviews and landscapes to capture. Includes three nights dinner, bed & breakfast. Evening entertainment in the hotel. Interested? Get in touch and we’ll send you further information and the holiday reference number.

Hedon Viewfinders visit to St Augustine’s Church – Wed 17 Oct 2018

HEDON VIEWFINDERS visits the town’s ‘King of Holderness’ the parish church of Saint Augustine on Wednesday 17 October.

Within the church walls is represented the spiritual and civic history of Hedon. The exterior is undoubtedly the town’s most photographed feature, but this visit will give you the chance to record the interior in photos and attempt to capture the history, architecture, atmosphere and character of the place.

Please meet at the North Transept doorway (the one facing Market Hill where the village green and beacon is located) in time for a prompt 7pm start.

We will make a collection towards church funds.

ALL WELCOME – you don’t have to be a ‘member’.

Hedon Viewfinders will interest photographers of all levels regardless of ability, and whatever image making device (whether camera or phone), kit or equipment owned. Novices particularly encouraged. Free, fun and friendly way to learn (and teach!) about photography.
