Hedon Viewfinders hosts a presentation by an award-winning wildlife photographer on Wednesday, 21 August. Tracey Lund, a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society won this year’s Open Natural World and Wildlife and UK National award categories in the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards. Her images of birds have earned her the title of Bird Photographer of the Year for 2018 and 2019. And she won the recognition of her peers The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers and became Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2018. These are just some of the many, many photography awards and accolades won by this talented yet modest photographer.

Tracey, who is from Sutton, is not just a passionate photographer of wildlife, but her adventures in capturing images of animals in different continents and places, whether tigers in India, lions in Africa or arctic foxes in Iceland, have inspired others to develop that same passion. Richard Burnham from Hedon Viewfinders went to hear Tracey speak last October at the Hull International Photography festival – and that inspired his own photographic development and his first photos of wild animals on an African safari. Richard will be joining other photographers and interested members of the public at the meeting at the Haven Arms which starts at 7pm prompt.

Tracey Lund wildlife photographer“I spend hours in the field and what some people don’t understand is that some feelings you get are priceless…it is a true blessing to be able to take the time to sit and watch wildlife let alone photograph it. Sometimes it’s more important to experience the moment rather than miss it taking photos.

“There is no better feeling than having those magical moments that will probably never be repeated but stay with you forever.  These are the moments that come back to me when looking at my images and make me smile and feel so lucky in doing what I do.”

We intend to hold a collection at the meeting for Tracey’s favourite charity:

My chosen charity is the World Land Trust:-

I love the natural world. Much of it is still alive due to wildlife lovers visiting these destinations which keeps wildlife valuable for the local people as they benefit from tourism. However, of course with this comes significant air travel involved and I am very much conscious of the carbon foot print from travelling to such destinations. One fantastic way in which we can all try and offset our impact through air and ground travel is with the ‘World Land Trust’.

This non-profit organisation have done a fantastic job of replanting lost forest around the world that will again absorb CO2 once again and continue to provide additional habitat for wild species.

We’ll quickly split into teams, organiser Glenn Stallard will explain what’s expected, and then armed with clues, the aim will be for you and your team members to bring your photographic record back with you. It’s not meant to be intensely competitive…. but which team will be the first back! 🙂

Looks like it’s going to be lots of fun and can take place whatever the weather.

Website Galleries – Chance to showcase your work.

There has been a request from some members not active on Facebook on how they might share their work, with some keen on getting feedback, constructive criticism, etc. Obviously the website is a place where this can happen. If any Viewfinders wish to take advantage of this, then email your work to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk and for those that send several photos we can set up your own gallery page in your name that you can link to and share with others should you wish to showcase your work.

Example of a Web Gallery Page.

Hedon Viewfinders Photographic Club competition results

HEDON VIEWFINDERS held its first trophy award competition on Wednesday (12 June 2019) and it was really successful. Participants had to attend the meeting in order to get their images entered. Organiser Glenn Stallard reported on the group’s Facebook Page afterwards:

“Fantastic night tonight folks, some great photos and three worthy winners.

B&W Section winner Cheryl Jagger.
Nature Section winner Peter Loft.
Landscape section winner Colin Booth.

Well done to the three winners, hope you like your trophies. Thanks also to all that entered the competition.

As members have asked to repeat the night and as the night was so successful the answer is a big yes, I’m sure we could arrange it, lets say every three months, Trophies for the winners and with the possibility of a small prize, maybe a medal for the runners up as well. Hopefully more of the club’s members entering next time.

Well done to everyone.”

The winning entries are below with the trophy winners.

Colin Booth, Cheryl Jagger and Peter Loft

If you have ideas for future categories for trophy club competitions then please get in touch.

We meet fortnightly at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH.

“What’s in your camera bag?” / Constructive Critique – Wed 15 May 2019

Our meeting on Wed 15 May will appeal to the curious! What kind of camera or image making device do people use? Which camera? And which lenses are their favourite? What gadgets and accessories? What flash, filters and fittings?

Wednesday 15 May 2019, Haven Arms, Havenside, HU12 8HH at 7pm

Our meeting on Wed 15 May will appeal to the curious! What kind of camera or image making device do people use? Which camera? And which lenses are their favourite? What gadgets and accessories? What flash, filters and fittings?

We are asking people to bring along your kit and camera bags and show us what you are ‘armed’ with when you go taking photos. If you are ‘self-contained’ with a mobile phone or compact, bring those along too.

You’ll be surprised how many people have the same equipment and sharing knowledge of what is available can really help us when seeking advice from each other on features, kit, accessories and apps. We’ll have a short break when people can meet up with others to ‘talk kit’ and ‘self-help’.

For the second part of the evening we are holding a constructive critique session and ask you to bring along one or two images that you would like to share with us so that we can discuss what we like about the photos, and how we think they might have been improved. Bring your photos along as prints (remember a protective cover for handling), or on a memory stick/flash drive. For those in the Facebook Group we’ll set up an album where you can post your images.

Tuesday 14 May 2019, Haven Arms, Havenside, HU12 8HH at 7pm

We have an extra session arranged on Tuesday for those interested in developing their editing skills. It’s a self-help group on using Layers, Blending Modes, and Masking in Photoshop. We’ll look at some examples on the big screen (using Elements) and those taking part can have a go themselves. You are welcome to bring along your own laptop.

As well as Photoshop and Elements, this should be useful for those that use Affinity Photo, Luminar and some other programs that use layers.

Do visit the web page and see what’s planned for the rest of the year.
