NEXT HAPPY HOUR!

We invite you to join us for our next Happy Hour! event on Zoom on Saturday 4 April at 9pm – and here is the invitation link:

https://us04web.zoom.us/j/836189559

Whilst at the Club Meetings we aim to continue having fun with the hobby and pastime that we love so much, Happy Hour, however, will be a much more relaxed affair!

It’s Happy Hour! Sat 28 March 2020 at 9pm.

After our first trial using Zoom, we’ve agreed to have weekly Club Meetings online every Wednesday night at 7pm. And ‘Happy Hour’ every Saturday at 9pm.

At the Club Meetings, we’ll aim to continue having fun with the hobby and pastime that we love so much, whilst Happy Hour will be a much more relaxed affair!

We invite you to join us for our first Happy Hour event (actually just over half-an-hour) on Saturday at 9pm – and here is the invitation link:

https://us04web.zoom.us/j/836189559

If you have downloaded the Zoom software already, then the Meeting ID: 836-189-559 is what will be useful.

Upon joining the meeting just before 9pm you will find yourself in the ‘Waiting Room’ and I’ll invite you to join the meeting from there. In the waiting room, you will have the opportunity to test your computer/device audio and video settings for use in the Happy Hour. If you click the link now, nothing much will happen, although you can download the meeting software. Any difficulties with the technology then do get in touch and we’ll try to help.

The event will be a light-hearted occasion. We want to firstly check everyone’s okay at this unsettling time, and offer comfort and advice if need be.

During the event everybody will be offered a moment in the spotlight should they wish, a spot to do something, say something, share something, etc. This will be for a minute or two-minute spot depending on how many join in. So you might tell a joke, tell us how you’re passing the time, play the ukulele, or share a photo or something on your computer. We’ll let you know how to use the software as we go along.

Our meetings are normally open to the public, and this will be no different – however, if you’re a new member, we just need to know that you are coming along – we won’t let strangers join the meeting.

Do check out Zoom, it might be useful to you for other things too: https://zoom.us/docs/en-us/covid19.html

Hedon Viewfinders Panning Competition and Sparkly Bulb Project

Panning Competition:

Following the last meeting on “Panning”, we are holding a club ‘competition’ for Panning photos. Members are invited to send up to three photos demonstrating the panning technique in via email to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk (members on Facebook can use the Panning Album set up in the Facebook Group)

The Photos will be shown on the screen at the next meeting on Wednesday 18 March 2020 and you’ll be asked to give information on them, such as Where, Time of Day, Settings, etc.

Everyone will take part in helping to score the best one of each person’s three photos and the winning shot from each person will be looked at later by Ray and Glenn, who will choose the winning shots. There’ll be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Certificates awarded at the following meeting on 1st April 2020.

Whilst a friendly competition – above all, we want to see your photos attempting to pan, whatever the results. We can all learn by analysing what didn’t go quite right, as much as by looking at those that turned out well.

Sparkly Bulb Project Night – Haven Arms, Tues 10 March 2020, 7pm

A one-off project night to recreate the Sparkler and Vintage Bulb photos popularised by Gavin Hoey of Adorama TV. See the YouTube video: https://youtu.be/1AkeFMzn_u8

Bring your camera and tripod (although you can lend a tripod for the shoot) and we’ll bring the rest. Let us know you’re coming (at viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk), and we’ll make sure we’ve got enough supplies for you to have a go at the shot.

Whilst an informal night, it’s also an opportunity to get some advice and tips on your photography.

Starts at 7pm on Tuesday 10 March at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon. Location: https://what3words.com/captive.crispier.pirate

All Welcome. Free, fun & friendly!

Camera Techniques with Hedon Viewfinders – Panning – Wed 4 March 2020

This meeting of Viewfinders will have a look at PANNING: The technique where you move your camera along in time with a moving subject and end up getting a sharp subject but with a blurred background. We can spend some time with you looking at your camera settings and practising the technique.

Our next meeting continues our programme of activities to help people get to know their cameras and settings better.

Panning – practice anywhere and with anything…!

Panning is the technique where you move your camera along in time with a moving subject and end up getting a sharp or relatively sharp subject in your photo, but with a blurred background. It’s a technique that is used a lot in sports and action photography.

This meeting of Viewfinders will have a look at panning and we will have a chance to practice. We can spend some time with you looking at your camera settings and having a go with the technique.

Things to have a look at on your camera that will be useful:

  • Have a look at some of the semi-automatic modes on your camera that might be useful and/or interesting to try i.e. shutter priority/timer value (TV) modes, any special scene modes for panning or sports.
  • Find out how to control the shutter speed and other settings manually.
  • Look how to set your focus to manual and what auto-focus options are available i.e. one-shot focus and continuous focusing.

The meeting takes place at The Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH at 7pm on Wednesday 4 March. All Welcome. Free, fun and friendly photography club.

———–

Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday! New to photography? Come along, you are very welcome – talk to us about your new camera, kit and accessories, and how to use them.

Five Challenges Night – Hedon Viewfinders Photographic Club

Hedon Viewfinders next meeting at the Haven Arms on Wednesday 19 February 2020 at 7pm will comprise five fun but technical and creative challenges. You’ll get a chance to work on each. If you’re unfamiliar with your camera settings, we can help you to get the shots whilst the more experienced will just get shooting.

The Five Challenges Night!

1. Splash photography – Capture a dramatic splash effect with our drops apparatus.
2. Lighting a match – Think three parts of this with our giant matches; the ignition, the flare and the settling flame
3. Bokeh – Create an attractive background with points of light whilst keeping your subject clear.
4. Blowing bubbles – How creative can you get?
5. Eggs – Bring your own egg! What creative opportunities can you set up for the other photographers present?

This will be a learning opportunity with your cameras for some, and a whole host of photographic fun for everyone. We’ll be issuing some light-hearted spot prizes on the evening too!

Photowalks:

Beverley Photo Walk hosted by the Hull Creative Photography GroupSunday 23 February 2020. Meet at the bandstand for 2pm. The relaxed walk will commence at 2.15pm. Find the Beverley bandstand meeting point with what3words: https://w3w.co/office.bossy.hothouse

Spurn Walkabout hosted by the Hull Creative Photography GroupSaturday 4 April – Meet at 10 am at the Spurn Visitor Centre. Walk (7-mile circular walk) starts 10.15 am (times may be revised dependent on tide times). The unique Spurn peninsular attracts tourists and photographers from across the country.

Whilst a great photography adventure, it can be ‘hard going’ walking Spurn, so adequate footwear/clothing is a must. The trip may not suit those unused to country walking. Find Spurn Visitor Centre with what3words: https://w3w.co/grand.goodnight.hosts

At last night’s (Wed 22 Jan) meeting we managed to generate lots of ideas for the club to consider and put into practice in order to better serve our members (will give feedback on this soon).

We now ask those who weren’t at the meeting, to consider some of the issues… General IDEAS for improving what we do, MEETINGS and what we want from them, FIELD TRIPS, and EXHIBITIONS – if you could take the time to add your comments about each, that would be much appreciated.

If you have suggestions on the following, do please email your suggestions to rlduffill@gmail.com or leave as comments below this post. By Wed 29 January 2020, please.

1. IDEAS for a better club; or for something different!
Example: Alternative Wednesdays to be used for field trips, outings?

2. MEETINGS – What shall we do? Think about Practical sessions, Speakers you might like, Workshops/Learning opportunities we might provide.

3. FIELD TRIPS. Think: Short outings, longer trips, coaches, public transport, car-sharing, holidays, events, photo opportunities?

4. EXHIBITIONS. Where can we showcase our work? There will be some Permanent/Regular places we could display, and venues for one-off special events?

With each, think about how easy things are to organise and make happen. Who might organise it; can you lend a hand? What costs might be involved?

From the list of suggestions, we will determine the priorities for the club, keeping in mind that we wish to provide activities that save members money and are free or inexpensive and maintain our intention to be an inclusive, fun and friendly place to learn and practice photography.

Check out our Key Dates page for news about our meetings on Wed 29 January and Wed 5 February.

Props and Experimentation Photography Night! Hedon Viewfinders Wed 8 Jan 2020

Bring in your interesting objects (ornaments, toys, instruments, flowers, etc) and any interesting kit you might have, and help create and share some photographic opportunities. This might be for still life, macro, bokeh shots, water shots – this is only limited by our imagination and space!

Our first meeting of 2020 takes place next Wednesday 8 January, 7pm at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH and will be another ‘Props Night – a chance to experiment’.

Some of you have got crystal balls (lensballs) for Christmas? Bring them along – what might we do with them?

Bring in your interesting objects (ornaments, toys, instruments, flowers, etc) and interesting kit you might have, and help create and share some photographic opportunities. This might be for still life, macro, bokeh shots, water shots – this is only limited by our imagination and space! As well as a chance for us to have a go at something different, it’s also a chance to practice with ideas that will work at our special joint meeting on Wed 29 January (not our normal Wednesday) with the Young Farmers Club – more about this at the next meeting!

If you need to get in early to set your prop up and claim table space, we’ll be open from 6:30pm. This is very much a chance to experiment – so if there is something you would really like to try, but don’t know where to start – then do get in touch and we’ll see what we can arrange!

Look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday! New to photography? Come along, you are very welcome – talk to us about your new camera, kit and accessories, and how to use them.
