Something very different for our next meeting!

Wed 16 October 2019, 7pm prompt at the Haven Arms.

Speaker: Mike Covell. Marfleet Murder Mystery. It’s 128 years ago since the discovery of the bloody body of Preston girl 18-year-old Mary Jane Langley. With her throat cut in a jagged wound, the murder instigated a media frenzy at the time but today is largely forgotten. And the murder still remains unsolved… Mike Covell investigates!

This will obviously interest photographers to discover how the documentary media of the time reported the case – but the presentation from Mike Covell will appeal to a far wider audience.

Hedon Viewfinders Club News Autumn 2019

Events.

Team Picture Quiz:
The next meeting takes place on Wednesday 2 October 2019 and is a Team Picture Quiz. A social event, this will involve splitting up into teams to help solve the answers to the ‘what’ and ‘where’ picture clues. Photos of unusual places and taken from unusual angles, your team will have to work out the answers. Devised by Glenn Stallard, who was also responsible for planning the very enjoyable Team Scavenger Hunt earlier this year, it promises to be lots of fun! Meet for 7pm start at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH.

Santa’s Grotto:
Once again we’ve been asked to do the Father Christmas grotto photographs at Hedon Christmas Lights at Hedon Town Hall on Friday, 29 November 2019. This is something that Hedon Viewfinders has done for the last couple of years in collaboration with Hedon Town Council. It raises money for the Mayor’s charity on the town’s busiest night of the year. Hopefully, it’s going to be a team event again and a great opportunity for members to join in both the fun of the picture-taking and also the organisation of the event on the night i.e. liaison with the families and children – it’s very busy! Anyone can get involved, it’s a great chance to practice portrait photography even if it’s not your normal genre, and of course, you’ll be part of the great Christmas atmosphere. Any offers of help appreciated – volunteers need to be available between 4pm and 9pm (but we can organise shifts if we get enough volunteers). As mentioned previously, it’s a busy night, but it is a great deal of fun. If you can volunteer on the night contact Ray at viewfinders-ttl@gmx.com soon, please.

Christmas Party:
Speaking of Christmas, the last meeting of the year is our Christmas Party on Wednesday 11 December 2019. It’ll be a hot buffet format (rather than a sit-down meal) with our own Christmas party entertainment and fun.  Costs will be £10 per head. Invite your partners/friends. Monies/bookings will be collected at our meetings or contact us to make other arrangements.

Joint Meeting with Young Farmers:
An early ‘heads-up’ for next year. We are holding a joint practical photography session (props and experimentation) with this youth organisation on Wednesday 29 January 2020 at 7pm. This is not our normal Wednesday session and will be held in a different venue. Watch out for further details nearer the date.

Programme for 2020:
We are now seeking YOUR IDEAS as to our PROGRAMME FOR 2020. What would you like to see the Club doing in the New Year? Do let us know your ideas for meetings (practicals and speakers), events and field trips.

Other events news – It’s HIP Festival in October (4th – 27th). Putting Hull on the international map for photography!

Submissions (including photographs) are now invited for the Ferens Open Exhibition 2020. Deadline 6th October 2019.

Volunteer.

Exhibitions Coordinator:
The Club is looking for a volunteer who can take the lead responsibility for arranging the club exhibitions. We have some exciting opportunities for working with community partners to hold some innovative exhibitions in the New Year. This role involves working with other members, venues and organisations to provide opportunities for the Club to display its members’ work. You don’t necessarily need experience (although that would be beneficial) as we have the expertise within the group to help, but we need a named-person and contact, a person with imagination and drive, who can coordinate the process of staging an exhibition from concept to realisation.
We’ll have some informal discussions about this role over the next few weeks, with a view to starting in the New Year. But do make contact if you are interested.

Constructive Critique and Printing.

Print Circle:
Is anyone interested in forming a self-help Print Circle? This would need about 10 people to work (and to keep it manageable) who would meet perhaps once a quarter to look at a print from each of its members with a view to offering constructive critique on each image and advise on the quality of the printing. The idea would be to improve our photography and print presentation. I think this would be really useful to those who aspire to enter more competitions, exhibitions or go for distinctions. We could look at using the Haven Arms on Tuesday nights for this. If this proves to be useful, then there is nothing to stop us from setting up more than one Print Circle. Again do make contact if you are interested.

“What’s in your camera bag?” / Constructive Critique – Wed 15 May 2019

Our meeting on Wed 15 May will appeal to the curious! What kind of camera or image making device do people use? Which camera? And which lenses are their favourite? What gadgets and accessories? What flash, filters and fittings?

Wednesday 15 May 2019, Haven Arms, Havenside, HU12 8HH at 7pm

Our meeting on Wed 15 May will appeal to the curious! What kind of camera or image making device do people use? Which camera? And which lenses are their favourite? What gadgets and accessories? What flash, filters and fittings?

We are asking people to bring along your kit and camera bags and show us what you are ‘armed’ with when you go taking photos. If you are ‘self-contained’ with a mobile phone or compact, bring those along too.

You’ll be surprised how many people have the same equipment and sharing knowledge of what is available can really help us when seeking advice from each other on features, kit, accessories and apps. We’ll have a short break when people can meet up with others to ‘talk kit’ and ‘self-help’.

For the second part of the evening we are holding a constructive critique session and ask you to bring along one or two images that you would like to share with us so that we can discuss what we like about the photos, and how we think they might have been improved. Bring your photos along as prints (remember a protective cover for handling), or on a memory stick/flash drive. For those in the Facebook Group we’ll set up an album where you can post your images.

Tuesday 14 May 2019, Haven Arms, Havenside, HU12 8HH at 7pm

We have an extra session arranged on Tuesday for those interested in developing their editing skills. It’s a self-help group on using Layers, Blending Modes, and Masking in Photoshop. We’ll look at some examples on the big screen (using Elements) and those taking part can have a go themselves. You are welcome to bring along your own laptop.

As well as Photoshop and Elements, this should be useful for those that use Affinity Photo, Luminar and some other programs that use layers.

Do visit the web page and see what’s planned for the rest of the year.

Light Painting Night – Photography fun in the dark!

HEDON VIEWFINDERS meets again on Wednesday 14 November 2018 and our theme for the evening is “Light Painting” or playing with light! 7pm at The Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon, HU12 8HH.

HEDON VIEWFINDERS meets again on Wednesday 14 November 2018 and our theme for the evening is “Light Painting” or playing with light!

Lots of special effects images can be created when light sources are moved in the dark. And at the Haven Arms on Wednesday (starting at 7pm) we are going to experiment (inside, and outside weather permitting) with the techniques behind creating these photos.

light painting
Photo: Glenn Stallard

Light painting, painting with light, light drawing, or light art performance photography are terms that describe photographic techniques of moving a light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or space, or to shine light at the camera to ‘draw’, or by moving the camera itself during exposure of light sources.

Never done this before? Then come along to Viewfinders and have a go! Our meetings aim to be fun, whilst learning more about photography.

Hedon Viewfinders Photography Visit to Water’s Edge, Barton POSTPONED

HEDON Viewfinders are having a trip across the Humber Bridge to Waters’ Edge at Barton-upon-Humber on Wednesday 27 June 2018 (instead of our regular meeting). We will be meeting to visit the woodland, wetlands and wild flower meadows area at 7:30pm in the free car parking area at the Visitor Centre.

HEDON Viewfinders have POSTPONED the trip across the Humber Bridge to Waters’ Edge at Barton-upon-Humber. We will re-schedule the visit and let members know.

One of our members describes a visit to Waters’ Edge:

“Several ponds, all accessible by a network of interesting footpaths, small woods, wild flowers, birds, etc. A 15min walk along the Humber Bank from Waters’ Edge will take you to Far Ings Nature Reserve, with more ponds and several bird hides. Barton Haven with a small boat yard, moored boats and an old barge. The Humber Bridge which you can walk under and looks quite spectacular from underneath. To finish there is The Sloop Inn close by for a night cap.”

Directions: From the north (and please consider car-sharing and offering lifts to those from the club without transport) – take the first exit after the Humber Bridge (A15), signposted Barton upon Humber. Brown signs will direct you through the town to Waters’ Edge. The country park is at the very end of Maltkiln Road and there is a large free car park immediately to the left as you enter the park. If you are using a satnav, enter the postcode DN18 5JR into your device to navigate your way to Waters’ Edge.

See: Visiting Waters’ Edge on the North Lincolnshire Council website.

Note: All our outdoor photo trips are weather dependent. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by cancelling due to inclement weather.

Hedon Viewfinders is the town’s free, fun and friendly photography club whose events and activities are open to all (no membership required). All welcome!

Macro Photography & Focus Stacking – Wed 13 June 2018

For our meeting on Wednesday 13 June we are having a Macro night and we ask you to bring in small objects that would make interesting subjects to photograph.

Macro photography – getting in close to your subject and creating larger-than-life images – is great fun and you don’t necessarily need lots of fancy equipment. The genre of close-up photography opens up a fascinating world that concentrates on the miniature and reveals details that are normally overlooked.

For our meeting on Wednesday 13 June we are having a Macro night and we ask you to bring in small objects that would make interesting subjects to photograph. You don’t have to look far for interesting objects – have a look around your kitchen or office desk for example for everyday objects that look amazing when studied up close or at higher magnification.

As well as a practical session, we’re hoping to widen our knowledge, skills and expertise about macro photography, by looking at ‘focus stacking’. With a little bit of instruction we hope you will be able to see a real improvement in your resulting macro images.

Focus stacking is a digital image processing technique which combines multiple images taken at different focus distances to give a resulting image with a greater depth of field (DOF) than any of the individual source images.

Meeting takes place at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH on Wednesday 13 June 2018 from 7pm. All welcome at our meetings (no membership required) whether you are a complete novice or a seasoned snapper!

Hedon Viewfinders will interest photographers of all levels regardless of ability, image making device, kit or equipment. Novices particularly encouraged.
