Film Noir Photography Night at Hedon Viewfinders

Film Noir Photography Night

Help us set the scene for our “Film Noir” Night at Hedon Viewfinders photography club. The Meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 26 October at the Haven Arms will take an affectionate look at this cinematic style of photography.

Think the 1940s, black and white, high contrast images with low-key lighting, shadows, mystery and murder!

Bring along your kit, equipment, costume items and props to help us create the scenes.

GO ABSTRACT! Photography Night with Hedon Viewfinders

GO ABSTRACT!

OUR ‘GO ABSTRACT!’ NIGHT will encourage participants to look at the world slightly differently. It involves trying to create images that are unusual, unique or require a personal interpretation from the photographer or viewer in order to enjoy them.

Composition, colour, texture, shape, form, light and shadow are some of the considerations for creating a good photograph of something. However, in abstract photography, those considerations are more important than the actual subjects or objects. Abstract photography has often been described as conceptual or photography that expresses how you feel emotionally about something. Whilst the ‘rules’ of photography apply, abstract photography will quite often break those rules to create images that are different or unique.

There is no formally accepted definition of abstract photography. Rather it’s a personal way of ‘seeing’ photography. We can practice this and attempt to improve our creative eye – and that is what we will be doing on Wednesday.

A collection of reference materials on abstract photography is available here: Wakelet Abstract Photography.

The resulting images from abstract photography can make fantastic prints and wall artworks that are unique. Indeed, abstract photography will be one of the components of Hedon Viewfinder’s exhibition in the spring of 2023.

So prepare to GO ABSTRACT! Wednesday 19 October 2022 at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon HU12 8HH at 7pm. ALL WELCOME.

Week 40 – Abstract Photography

There is no wrong way to do this – so go, have fun, and make some unique and special images!

WEEK 40 of the 52-Week Photography Challenge is about exploring Abstract Photography.

#viewfinderschallenge
#viewfinderschallengeweek40

The majority of photographs taken in the world capture a moment in time. They record something which the photographer thought was important at the time. The captured images mostly represent something easily identifiable and as the viewer we recognise them. However, not all photos have to be this way!

An abstract image is non-representational and reflects the personal viewpoint of the photographer. It’s not about replicating reality, rather it is about creating an alternative reality.

Abstract photography features form and shape, colour and texture, light and shadow in an image. It is your own way of seeing the world from your perspective. As such the opportunities to create new and unique images are raised.

Abstract photography is fun and easy to do – but harder to explain! It involves developing observational skills (look up, look down, look close, look wide, different perspectives, different viewpoints) and creative skills important in all photography, but it needs to be your own very personal way of seeing the world.

Your challenge this week is to explore the world of abstract photography and transform a simple view of the world into something very different! There is no wrong way to do this – so go, have fun, and make some unique and special images!

As ever, these challenges are to encourage new photography, so we ask you not to simply re-use your existing stock (unless necessary for the particular challenge).

And do please send in your images associated with these challenges – or your other activities as a Club Member. We will publish them on these pages.

E-mail them to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com.
