For our meeting Wednesday, 26 August 2020 it’s a practical MACRO and CLOSE-UP photography theme night. We’ll be inside and outside (depending on the weather). Bring your camera, a tripod if you have one and small objects/flowers, etc for inside (flash, torches, LED light panels, etc will be useful too). 7pm at the Haven Arms – social distancing rules apply.

Note: We’re not able to offer any ‘hands-on’ advice with any kit due to social-distancing and COVID-19 restrictions applying.

Wednesday’s activity is part of a regular weekly programme of activities that will now be organised from or at our base at the Haven Arms, Havenside, Hedon. We will be primarily using the outside area of the pub for activities but have the option to gather indoors during inclement weather – and of course, we can benefit from refreshments at the pub!

For Wednesday’s meeting (19th August, Haven Arms, 7pm) we’re going to be looking at and demonstrating everything to do with REMOTE PHOTOGRAPHY i.e. ways to fire your shutter or another photography device without actually pressing the button on your camera!

We’ll aim to look at methods including cables, wireless, smartphone apps and other specialist means of operating the camera from a distance.

Note: We’re not able to offer any ‘hands-on’ with any kit due to social-distancing and COVID restrictions applying, but the session will serve to show people what methods are available. If you already use a remote system, please bring it along.

This is a list of twenty-four ideas from which you can pick one – or more – to give yourself a personal photographic challenge. We have started this on Facebook, the object for members is to try something new. The list is based on Photo Tips cards.

Jenny Young tackled several of the challenges and we are delighted to publish her top ten as a slideshow here! Her close-up of an eye is our featured photo here.

Hedon Viewfinders has utilised the personal challenge approach to photography a few times over the last few years. So, if you are still searching for inspiration on what to shoot, then check out our 52 Week Photo Challenge and our 52 Weekly Photography Ideas (next week, is week 30). Of course during Lockdown in 2020 members tackled 50 daily tasks which proved very popular.

If you want to share your photo challenge results with other members, then send them to us by email viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk, please.

Club meet-ups and events – Complete the form with your ideas

WE asked you last month what we might do to help re-invigorate your interest in photography and the club following the easing of lockdown. The response from members came mainly from the handful of those active on Zoom. This article suggests what we might do as a club in the short-term whilst following the guidelines necessary during the coronavirus pandemic.

Photowalks and visits to places for photography can still take place as long as individuals commit to following the Government guidelines on keeping safe.

From Saturday, July 4th, then when you are outside you can continue to meet in groups of up to six people from different households, following social distancing guidelines. Gatherings of more than 30 people are not allowed. Whilst outdoors you should limit your interactions with people outside of your household (or your support bubble if applicable) as much as possible.

In light of the above guidelines then we cannot organise meetings inside our club venue the Haven Arms. However, we can suggest that members take up similar projects and challenges whilst abiding by the guidelines.

Therefore, we are going to suggest places where members might like to visit for photography purposes, and at staggered times, and whilst members may see each other for the first time for months, they must still stay apart but can engage in the photography of land and seascapes, public art, architecture, street photography, etc.

Photo Walks:

One of our first such events has been arranged for next Tuesday 7th July from 8pm at Paull. The first of us will meet outside the Humber Tavern from 8pm and then disperse around the village and estuary, we can then have a second group if necessary gather at 8.15pm. Whilst around the village and estuary, members from different households must stay apart. During our time at Paull, members can keep in touch via mobile phones, so while hands-on advice and help with settings, exposure, etc will not be possible, some coaching can be possible over the phone. Following the event members can share the best of their work from the visit via the website and social media.

Other places where members might like to visit for photo walks that we have agreed to arrange, are;

  • Walk along Hedon Road/King George Dock/Siemens/Victoria Dock which can be broken down into manageable slices for both walkers/car-drivers.
  • Maritime Trail on the outskirts of Hull City Centre.

We will arrange dates and staggered times for each of the above.

Speakers/Subjects:

We intend to organise a series of online talks/workshops for members. The following subjects are being considered – but we need your ideas too:

  • Sports photography
  • Macro photography
  • Wildlife photography
  • Architecture and buildings
  • Wedding photography
  • Portraits/people photography

For the talks, we need your guidance as to the best format to hold them. Are you more likely to listen to speakers and ask questions afterwards via Zoom, Facebook Live or YouTube Live? There will be costs involved in organising these events so we need to ensure that members are willing to use the appropriate technologies.

In addition, we will be looking at socially distanced outdoor photography opportunities which will need to be booked but giving interested members the chance to shoot portraits, modern and vintage motor vehicles and a night time shoot (with a generator, lights and other essential props).

Moving forward out of strict lockdown has been particularly difficult, but we hope the above provides some interest and incentive for members.

We are after your comments and ideas and invite you to give them below:

Seeking ideas: Reinvigorating your interest in photography!

What can we do now to encourage people to take up their cameras once more and renew their enjoyment of photography? How can we reinvigorate interest in photography and the club?

HEDON Viewfinders has been meeting twice a week since lockdown on Zoom; a weekly club meeting on Wednesdays and a Saturday night social Happy Hour have been taking place – and while we have had some good attendances and participants have found them useful and fun, attendance has been far lower than our meetings in the Haven Arms before lockdown

Zoom has allowed us to meet face to face as a club, but I am interested in hearing ideas from other members, who don’t normally attend, on ways that we might involve you more in the group? What can we organise for you; how can we organise in a way that you would feel comfortable with?

It may become easier to organise socially distanced indoor events when/if the lockdown eases even more from next month, but social distancing looks likely to be a feature of life for some time to come yet. And whatever the easing of social distancing, some people will still lack the confidence to meet in larger groups.

We can potentially bring people together more using the Facebook Live and YouTube Live platforms which would have to be very speaker driven. But it is possible to get speakers and organise workshops/demonstrations live online – and in many ways, this gives us the opportunity to get more speakers from more afar and on a wider range of subjects.

We still keep in touch with the majority of our previously active participating members via this website and e-mail but there has been little engagement from many of you via Facebook or Zoom recently – so we do have to look at our methods again.

Despite the pandemic – and because of it; what can we do now to encourage people to take up their cameras once more and renew their enjoyment of photography? How can we reinvigorate interest in photography and the club?

Open to ideas folks! Send us your suggestions: CONTACT US.

The Eddie Vision Song Contest – Happy Hour with Hedon Viewfinders

Hedon Viewfinders photographic club has continued to meet online during the coronavirus crisis. The club has a reputation for being a fun, friendly and social place to learn about photography, and that has still been the case during the lockdown.

A weekly club meeting on Wednesdays at 7pm via Zoom invites members to meet, chat and discuss photography challenges. We have recently shared members’ best lockdown photos. These have included shots of Oil and Water (not mixing!) and taking multi-coloured photos. This week members are experimenting with Portrait Photography.

The club also meets every week on a Saturday for a Happy Hour (or two).

During Happy Hour, as well as traditional quizzes, members have held a Mexican Night and a Murder Mystery Night. And this Saturday the club is holding its very own version of Eurovision: The Eddie Vision Song Contest!

Members will each be allocated a country and will choose a song to compete in the club’s own version of Eurovision complete with the famous voting rounds from judges. With a photo element to the competition too, we are sure it will be an enjoyable evening with no-one receiving the ultimate Eurovision put-down of ‘Nil Point’.”
