Hull Fair Trip and other news

The Club’s Annual Trip to Hull Fair on Wed 12 October 2022! Note – weather permitting!

WEDNESDAY 12 OCTOBER – Hull Fair Trip!

AFTER MISSING our Annual Trip to Hull Fair due to the pandemic, we are looking forward to re-acquainting ourselves with all the fun of the fair (note: weather permitting)!

The fair is obviously the source of many photo opportunities but a favourite is using long exposures at night to capture the blur of moving rides. A tripod is obviously useful here.

For those worried that the fair is too busy for photography and setting up tripods, etc, then please don’t worry. In years of photographing the fair then there have never been any problems finding places to shoot. Just be aware of who’s around you and try not to spoil anyone else’s view or fun. And keep an eye on loose equipment and bags, etc, and those of others. Sadly, the police do warn us each year that thieves and pickpockets are active and no doubt ‘work’ the fair – so bear that in mind at all times. Again, we have never experienced anything untoward on our previous club outings.

We are meeting at the Anlaby Road junction at Walton Street (the pub corner) from 6.45pm – 7.00pm and will make our way around fair as one or two groups depending on how many of us are there.

For those that wish, then another, rarer photo opportunity of the fair presents itself on the Sunday after the fair is closed (16 October this year). It’s a chance to get views of the fairground being deconstructed, packed up, and trucked away. You’ve got to be careful because it’s a working area, but some great images are to be made.

We’ve noticed more and more photographers turning up each year to photograph the after-fair experience. If you fancy an after-fair trip on Sunday morning, give a shout-out via comments, the Facebook Group or the WhatsApp chat group.

Paull Holme Tower visit

You need to let us know you are coming IN ADVANCE, please!

The 700-year-old Paull Holme Tower was once part of a grand manor house complex and is a Grade 1 listed ancient monument. It was opened to the public for the first time ever in September 2011 and quite simply was a wreck and classed by English Heritage as ‘at risk’ of being lost forever.

However, through the efforts of Simon Taylor, who bought the tower and pledged to do something with it, the monument was saved and funding secured to shore the building up and latterly to construct a new roof and restore the crenelations (battlements).

Hedon Viewfinders members first visited the tower as a club in 2016 before the construction work. This next visit by the club is on Wednesday (10 August 2022) and should allow us to see the work that has been done and afford some rooftop views to those braver members wishing to climb up to the top.

It will be a fascinating visit. However, because it is a very old building (it’s not a refined tourist attraction) then entry to the tower will be at members’ own risk. Should you choose not to enter then there are still some great photography opportunities to be had from the outside.

Members are advised to meet at Paull Holme Strays Nature Reserve car park in time for a 6.45pm short walk to the tower (we will arrange to ferry those to the site who find the 5-minute walk difficult – let us know in advance).

Directions to the Nature Reserve: From the A1033 follow the signs for Fort Paull and then head south on Thorngumbald Road. The entrance to the car park is on the right just less than a mile after St Andrew’s Church. Get there ready to leave for the walk to the tower by 6.45pm, please.

If you are planning to attend, and haven’t informed us already, then please email on viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com to confirm your intention to attend.

Hedon Catholic Church visit

OUR NEXT MEET-UP is to visit the Hedon Catholic Church….

Hedon Catholic Church visit:

WE HAVE A VISIT arranged to photograph Hedon’s historic catholic church on Wednesday 29 June 2022.

St Mary and St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Baxtergate was built in 1803 with a very plain exterior, reflecting the fact that Protestantism was the official religion and Catholic activity was very much restricted. Local Catholics had previously worshipped in secret and led an underground existence. The church, however, has a beautiful interior and is almost a ‘secret’ gem of a building in the town.

Members should arrange to meet early so that we can have a prompt entry to the church at 7.00pm. The visit will last one hour.

Park at Johnson’s Corner in Hedon. Look for the Shakespeare Inn when crossing the road onto Baxtergate. When you reach the wall of the pub grounds, you will see the church on your left.

Club News – Choose a topic and Bridlington Weekend!

CHOOSE a topic for a Club Talk – Mike Covell is back speaking at Hedon Viewfinders!

MIKE COVELL, historian, tour guide and expert on the darker side of local history, last spoke to Hedon Viewfinders in October 2019 on the grizzly murder of local girl Mary Jane Langley in Preston in 1891. It was a very different night for the photography club which appealed to and attracted a far wider audience. Prior to that, Mike has also hosted an amazing photo walk around Hull City Centre for Viewfinders.

Well, he’s back! And we have a choice of three subjects to choose from for his topic at a future meeting.

  1. Witchcraft in Yorkshire
  2. East Yorkshire Defences in World Wars 1 and 2
  3. East Yorkshire Ghosts

Each subject has an interest factor for photographers with photography being one of the documentary mediums used to report and record the subject matter. But again each subject has the potential to attract a non-photographer audience too.

Do let us know in the comments which subject you would prefer – or take part in the poll on the Hedon Viewfinders Facebook group: Viewfinders – Through the Lens (Members).

VIEWFINDERS WEEKEND IN BRIDLINGTON (Friday 17 June to Sunday 19 June 2022)

Please indicate your interest by emailing us at viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or rlduffill@gmail.com and we’ll reply with further details.
