Photography Challenge and League Table.

Put the bunting out – it’s competition time! #photography_challenge_2021

In response to a gift from the Hedon Mayor of a project book 104 things to photograph, a new Photography Challenge 2021 has been launched.

The challenge to be conducted throughout the year will seek to inspire members to make images in response to subjects suggested by the book. The first five people responding to each subject will score a point each just for entering. And one photograph out of the five will be declared ‘winner’ and receive a further 2 points.

At the end of the year, the photographer with the highest points in a League Table will win £25.

All the information to start taking part is at the new web page:

Belated Happy and Healthy New Year!

Best wishes to all Hedon Viewfinders for a happy – and a HEALTHY – 2021. Some club information for you…

Best wishes to all Hedon Viewfinders for a happy – and a HEALTHY – 2021.

It has been a slow start to the new year dictated as it is by the impact of the pandemic. But we do hope that with the roll out of the vaccination programme that we will be in a better position to meet up or engage in activities again by the Spring.

Via our Facebook Group, we have started collecting members’ favourite photographs taken each month in monthly albums. We’re asking members to submit their favourite photograph each month and we will store these for potential use in our annual projects; perhaps to inform the selection of photographs for exhibitions and also, perhaps, to gather enough photos each month to be able to design a club calendar for 2022.

Facebook members can place their favourite photo for January in the appropriate album now. If you are not on Facebook, you can send your favourite photo taken this month to email viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk and I’ll save them for you. We’ll place your image in the Facebook January Album unless you instruct us not to. If you take a better photo before the end of the month and prefer that to your original, just email again and we will replace the photo and delete the old one.

Regarding Facebook – the social network keeps changing and re-inventing itself. A recent change in its notifications has resulted in many members not receiving regular notifications. But you can change this – and hopefully, it will improve your engagement with the page:

  1. Go to the three dots on the right hand of the page and click
  2. Look for Manage notifications
  3. Click All posts to make sure you are notified of All posts.

And to those not on Facebook? Consider it. Whilst in many ways the social network is awful, you can opt to open a basic account and join our group page and do nothing else on the network. The advantages are that we can quick and easily send you messages and notifications about club activities.

Finally, if you are looking for photography inspiration, then have a look at our 52 Week Photography Challenge 2018 and our 52 Week Photography Ideas 2019 for starters.

If you have any ideas on what Viewfinders might be doing to encourage photography in these strange times, then get in touch! Your ideas would be really welcome!

Merry Christmas! – And yes, looking forward to 2021

A MERRY CHRISTMAS to all subscribers from Hedon Viewfinders. This photo was taken by Jim Uney via a Christmas album on our active Club Facebook group page.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS to all subscribers from Hedon Viewfinders. This photo was taken by Jim Uney and submitted via a Christmas album on our Facebook group page. It depicts St. Augustine’s Church, Hedon during the ‘Big Freeze’ of 2010.

The year 2020 year started off so promising with club meetings on Panning, Light Painting and sparkly light bulbs. In February we had a Club Photography Holiday Trip to ‘Shakespeare Country’ with ten of us taking part. I remember thinking at the time that 10 was not actually very many of us – but what a luxury it was meeting with 10 photography friends considering that very soon due to the pandemic gatherings of that size would be banned. Yes, 2020 will be remembered as the Year of COVID-19 and the misery and restrictions that ensued.

Hedon Viewfinders cancelled its meetings due to the first lockdown in March and a small hardcore group of members opted to continue meeting via Zoom video conferencing. These online meetings were held twice a week with a Club Night on Wednesdays and a Happy Hour social evening on a Saturday. Happy Hours became longer, more complex and more fun as the weeks in isolation went by. We had themed quizzes e.g. Mexican and Irish nights, Music and Video presentations, a Murder, Mystery Night and our very own version of the Eurovision Song Contest. A special mention must be given to Nigel and Wendy Robson (aka Bonnier Logs and Bonny Dowser) for spending many hours preparing quizzes and online games for us to enjoy.

Also during the first lockdown, we held our Daily Tasks photographic challenges which helped keep members occupied during a particularly bad time spent for many of us in isolation.

As the first lockdown came to an end the Club began to meet tentatively again under the Government’s ‘Rule of 6’ guidelines. Our six-people ‘weekly workshops’ approach allowed meetings and the opportunity to practice and experiment with our photography. The Club wishes to give its thanks to the Haven Arms for the continuing support in facilitating these meetings – Thank You, Mark and Alison! We look forward to better times and returning to the pub for weekly meetings and events sometime in 2021. In the meantime, we encourage members to support the pub in these difficult times by using their takeaway meals service. Contact them via private message on Facebook or telephone on 07845 191 366.

We now look forward to 2021 with some optimism for a return to a more normal life later in the year. We want to ensure the club remains relevant to you and your passion for photography so if you do have ideas for things that the club might do – now or in the future – then please do get in touch.

CONTACT US.

FINALLY, we wish you all the best for 2021 – keep safe, enjoy your photography, make great images and can’t wait to invite you to our first ‘normal’ meet-up at some point in the New Year!

Looking for a New Year challenge? Well, you could go down the Weekly or Daily Challenge routes, or set your own personal project.

Here’s an idea “Hunt the Alphabet”. Find things to photograph that look like a letter from A – Z . This idea comes from Janet Bucknall a few years ago when she used a set of photos to spell the word HEDON. But we’ll add the rule ‘no actual letters’ allowed!

When you’ve collected your 26 photographs you might want to find a way to present them, perhaps in a grid and post them as one photo. As you see and take your photos of each individual letter, send them to us here to post as an encouragement to others #alphabet

HEDON VIEWFINDERS is pleased to present The Hedon Open Photography Exhibition 2020 – its first online exhibition.  It’s an open theme i.e. any genre, style or type of photography was accepted. The Exhibition is hosted on the Hedon Blog (HU12 Online) at:

https://hu12.online/the-hedon-open-photography-exhibition-2020/

it is also available on our own website page here.

This is our third exhibition which we should have held in the ‘real world’ but like other organisations, we have been affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Please do share information about the exhibition and help us get a ‘larger than ever’ online audience for our photographers’ images!

—————-

Note: The current lockdown and virus threat prohibits us from holding meetings. But in the New Year, we hope to be able to continue with our BOOKABLE WORKSHOPS at the Haven Arms on Wednesdays. We may have to continue to limit to less than six people per workshop and participants will most likely still need to WEAR A FACE COVERING when not sat down. However, the workshop format does allow us to concentrate on individual participants interests much more and also enjoy more quality time to experiment with our photography! Also, we are not restricted to Wednesdays only!

#NOTE: Social-distancing and contact & trace measures apply to all events.

Weekly Challenges. With the success of our Daily Tasks during the last lockdown to guide us, Hedon Viewfinders will aim to provide a series of challenges for members to tackle during the current restrictions that prevent us from meeting.

Challenge 1.

Hedon Viewfinders Exhibition 2020 – Call for Members’ Images

Hedon Viewfinders Exhibition 2020 – the CALL for Members’ Images is now OPEN and LIVE

We are going ONLINE for our 2020 Exhibition held Saturday 14 November 2020 until Monday, 4 January 2021.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a terrible impact on the world and affected our way of life. Carrying out the art and craft of photography from an individual point of view, and from a Club point of view, has necessarily changed and we all have had to adapt to the new circumstances.

Hedon Viewfinders has managed to maintain its existence and identity as a Club during this unsettling period. Rather than seeing the restrictions on how many people can meet ‘the rule of 6’ as a negative, we are currently embracing the ‘power of six’ to develop our workshop approach and creativity. And before that during the six-month lockdown, members resorted to Zoom video technology in order to continue to meet both for Club events and socially.

We are now going to use what we’ve learned during the pandemic to stage our most ambitious event yet: Exhibition 2020.

Using the Club website, the Hedon Blog website, and links with local media, we will be hosting an Online Open Exhibition of members work which will reach a larger audience than we ever could with just a traditional exhibition.

All those associated with the Club and in receipt of this email are invited to submit two images to the exhibition. We hope to be able to use your Number 1 image in the Exhibition and your Number 2 image may be selected for inclusion too.

  • The theme of Exhibition 2020 is ‘Open’ which means that you can submit images of any genre.
  • Images should be taken this year or in the last 12 months.

We will categorise images in the Online Gallery and whilst not a competition, we will award some images with recommendations and award small prizes, and bring them (and their photographers) to the attention of local media.

We will offer images for public sale under the following terms:

    • A4 prints £20 (the photographer will get £16 from any sale).
    • Folio of five 6×4 prints selected by the customer £20 (the photographer will get £3 if their image is one of the five.
    • If the photographer wishes to purchase their own A4 print, it will cost £4. A folio of five will cost the photographer the same as a member of the public (minus £3 i.e. £17) so we can maintain income for other photographers. Photographers will be paid by bank transfer or cheque.
    • Customers will receive your images on professional photographic paper.
    • Hedon Museum (my chosen good cause) will benefit from every print sale and folio sale to the amount of £3.

More detailed information will be published. But for now, we can declare that the CALL for Members’ Images is now OPEN and LIVE.

Your Two Images should be submitted by email in the following format:

Email Subject: Exhibition 2020

Number 1 Image – Title (as it will appear in the Gallery)
Number 2 Image – Title (as it will appear in the Gallery)
Your Name

Please use the following convention to name your JPEG files no1_title_your_name
JPEG files should be of the highest resolution possible.

# Closing date for sending your images Saturday 7 November #

Your image files can be sent direct to viewfinders-ttl@gmx.co.uk or sent using WeTransfer to the same e-mail address if you prefer.
