Meeting: Photoelasticity
Our next meeting on Wednesday 29 March 2023 is on Photoelasticity. This mixes science with photography! It’s quite an unusual style of photography, and sometimes confuses those viewing the photographs into thinking it has all been Photoshopped – but it’s actually created in your camera or phone through the lens. All welcome. Prepare to have some fun doing something different!
“Wednesday night we’ll need tripods, and if people have laptops or light boxes and circular polariser filters, if they bring them that would be helpful. Also clear plastic items, cutlery, bottles, and small ornaments. Anything really that’s clear plastic.
‘Photoelasticity is the visual effect of demonstrating the stress distribution in a material’… It’s basically an x-ray of an object. The results though are what us (and our cameras) are really interested in. The stress areas show up as iridescent colours, the heavier the stress the darker the colour.”
